Macron asserts a salutary goal, bringing back a respect for civilised conversation. The mutual respect for differing, even distasteful, views is an essential pillar of civilisation and progress, for how else may we argue against flawed opinion, and move on? As Karl Popper said, "You may be right and I may be wrong, and with some effort we may get nearer to the truth." And as Churchil said, "Jaw Jaw, is Better than War War." However, Macron draws a false contrast between argumentation and emotion. As Aristotle pointed out in his book The Art of Rhetoric, other things being equal, the stronger of two arguments is the one that harnesses the stronger passion; logic and passion act in tandem.

As I argue, in my book The Myth of the Closed Mind, all emotion is filled with thought, all thought is emotional. Passion and reasoning do not exist in separate domains, but are intricately entwined. I also point out that negative emotions, though strong, tend to be short lived, as they quickly use up emotional energy; they can wip up a mob in an afternoon, but subside. But the noble passions of love, honour, friendship, love of truth, wonder, etc, endure, and enliven those they inhabit. But these passions need consistent argumentation to sustain; we have to take personal responsibility for promoting the noble thoughts and feelings. The better argumentation can win, but only if pressed. And, lest we become dismayed by how slow reason is sometimes, we need to take heed of Shakespeare, when he said:

"How poor are they that have not patience!
What wound did ever heal but by degrees?
Thou know’st we work by wit and not by witchcraft,
And wit depends on dilatory time. (II.iii.)
