Hikers can start from the top down at Chamberlain's Ranch which requires a permit, or they can start from the bottom up at the Temple of Sinawava which requires no permit. The hike goes through a deep canyon with steep cliff walls rising above them.

The bottom up hike goes up to Big Spring which is 8.6 miles round trip and takes a full day. There is no trail, rather hikers wade upstream through the Virgin River. Water depth can fluctuate greatly from knee deep to chest deep depending on the time of the year.
