PSA for anyone looking to buy a new refrigerator that uses R134. Someone else mentioned this below and it happened with my recent purchase of a new GE side by side. The floor model showed R134. When my new refrigerator was delivered, it turned out to be using R600. So even if you find a floor model using R134, in the end you may wind up with a refrigerator using R600.

Going back some years ago I was working for appliance service contractors part time. I am still in touch with people who are servicing appliances. My specialty work was servicing TVs, monitors, audio systems, and video tape machines. I also did some appliance servicing at times. From what I have seen best appliances for reliability have been the GE, Electrolux, Bosch, and Kitchen Aid. Some models scored a bit better than others. But, overall they are very good. Most of the problems in fridges have been with the ice makers and the water coolers. Most models of fridges today come with water and ice features. Many people don't put in the water connection. It can be a big hassle with the filters and keeping it clean.

There are the very high end appliances that have terrific service and high reliability, but for most people these are far too expensive. These are Miele, Fisher and Paykel, Thermador, and WOLF Sub Zero. This is the same for the ovens, cook tops, and ranges.

In the regular affordable type appliances staying with the US and German based manufactures have had the best reliability, and best availability for parts and service. The appliances from the S.Korean manufactures were the worse of the lot for reliability and availability for replacement parts! I have seen important replacement parts take over three months. The customers had no properly working fridge. Some were completely failed. The solution was to abandon the fridge for a new one or to buy another to use temporarily. One thing about the S.Korean appliances is they were among the nicest looking and have the most sophisticated features. Sophisticated features use more computer type circuit boards which adds to less potential long term reliability.

Whatever you buy it is a wise idea to take an extended warranty. It is an assurance in case something expensive fails. In some of these appliances a repair cost can easily far exceed what you would pay to have a few extra years of extended warranty. For example in an induction range some of the circuit boards can cost from over $600 to over $1800 just for the board alone without the installation cost. With age these do sometimes fail. On a $6, 500 induction range I have seen a number of times an out of warranty repair costing over $2200 because the main power driver board for the cook top failed. The customer gambled on not having a service contract at the time of purchase.

great to have your opinions. maybe you could put the refrigerator models that you do recommend in a list. Had to go back and keep pausing the video to note the model #'s. (camera work makes you dizzy and it was blurry when you zoomed in to the labels.=).

Great info. Thanks a lot for your point of view. Was looking at the Cafe CQE28DM5NS5 quad door that has a triple evaporator not sure of refrigerant. What would be your suggestion for a quad door refrigerator? We do not like the pull out drawers due to food getting lost based on how it gets stored.

Hi. This video is very helpful. I hope you can clarify something. You say don't buy if they have R600 refrigerant. You recommend GE but on their website it says they use R600a refrigerant. Can you please clarify for me? Trying to find a fridge for my mom. Thank you.

I learned today that many floor models are the r134a, but that is not what you will be buying. You’ll get the updated model with the r600a. Look at the model number on the inside label of the fridge and then the model on the store price tag. Likely they will be different by a letter or two and that’s where they sneak in the r600. They just haven’t updated the floor models.

Is it really the R600 causing the problems or is it the fact that everything is made like trash nowadays and everything is now using the R600?

Any thoughts between the KitchenAid 48 inch side by side ( ice maker only ) and the monogram (48 inch side by side). Thank you so much !

Very helpful video!! My wife and I were sold on Samsung’s Bespoke line with all its beautiful features, but all the negative feedback Samung has received in recent years cannot be ignored. Will look into some of these R134 lines you recommended!

This has been the most informative refrigerator tutorial I've been able to find on the web in months. Thank you for taking the time to help us non pros select the right manufacturer so we hopefully don't have problems and buyer's remorse down the road.
I've been looking for a 42 inch wide refrigerator for over a year. I haven't had any luck. Was looking at the Kitchen Aid but the model I was looking at was discontinued and the new models are having issues.
Can you please give me your recommendation? I've been living with a bar fridge for months.
Thanks

I'm 76 and have always had top freezer models and NEVER had any of them repaired. The side by sides and french door models are just problems looking for a home. Ypu [ay heavily for the sexy looks of them,
The Kenmore I have now is close to 20 years old, the icemaker crapped out at about 3 years so I went back to using ice cube trays, outside of that icemaker It just works. When I fist bought this house in 1981 I had an old kelvinator that was purchased in 1960 and was discrded at 25 years because the shelf supports started to fail but that box STILL WORKED

Your video had a lot of great information. I found the compressor issue interesting since I’m looking for a new refrigerator. I’m having problems finding out if the r600 compressor is installed. Where did you find this info? I’m researching GE’s online and haven’t found the info. Is it in the refrigerator itself? If so I’ll need to look in person. Thank you for the info!

Great review. It was a BIG help to learn about the single and dual compressors and the R134 vs R600 refrigerant. Make a lot of sense and makes it much easier to select WHICH refrigerator to purchase based on just those two facts!

Great review. Your honesty is welcome. I've had Kitchen Aid and Samsung and the Kitchen Aid was great, but I replaced it with a Samsung and the ice make has to be defrosted manually every month. Horrible ice maker.
