Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh’s assassination in Tehran on July 31 was carried out using an explosive device, as per the New York Times. The device was covertly smuggled into a guesthouse where he was staying, the NYT cites seven Middle Eastern officials as saying.
The bomb had been hidden approximately two months ago in the guesthouse run and protected by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). The report says that the guesthouse is part of a large compound, known as Neshat, in an upscale neighborhood of northern Tehran.
The bomb was detonated remotely, five of the officials said, once it was confirmed that Haniyeh was inside his room at the guesthouse. Moreover, NYT says, “several US officials” have reached the “assessment” that Israel was responsible for the assassination.
The top Hamas leader was in Iran’s capital for the presidential inauguration and was killed along with his bodyguard.
