Lionheart's History of Prussia Part 80:

More than anywhere else, Prussia found the British people the hardest to subjugate. Despite their best efforts to stamp out the fires of rebellion that sprung up, two more would rise to take the place of each one snuffed out. The culmination of this cat and mouse game across the English countryside came in November 1809, when some ten thousand patriots rose up in Surrey and Hampshire, and marched on London. The Prussians, who were largely occupied with other rebellions in Oxfordshire and Warwickshire, were not able to return to London in time, and on their arrival they found the fate of General Merkle, who had been forced to defend the city alone. His head, bruised and lacerated, was delivered to the Prussians in a black box along with the message ‘Britons never shall be slaves’. King George was broken out of Bushy House, though his enthusiasm for the escape is dubious.

Prussian retribution was swift and merciless. Upon their re-entry to the city, they set about making an example of the locals. King George was forcibly returned to Bushy House, this time with a much larger guard assigned to him, food availability to the city was curtailed, and wherever trophies from the fallen Prussian garrison were found, the entire household was killed. In response the citizens of London took to the streets, and in the 1809 winter riots, of which there were several, over a thousand civilians lost their lives. Not to be outdone, the north of England revolted in turn, and began to steal from and burn Prussian supply depots. In return the Prussians clamped down harder, chasing down all signs of resistance with extreme force. None of this news made it back to Prussia, where the public were ensured that the British were receiving their Prussian overlords with open arms. The story told by the French press painted a very different picture of events, and one that was unprecedentedly sympathetic to the British. It was claimed that the Prussians were bayoneting and eating English babies, and families were being burned alive inside their houses. The latter claim arose from a very true story, in which John Henry Manners, the Duke of Rutland, was found to be the chief instigator of the rebellion that took London, and was dealt with in brutal fashion. Other incidences of this are unknown, however.

While Prussia strained to control Britain, the French spotted an excellent opportunity for war. With Spain proving incapable of retaking Barcelona, despite their best efforts, the news that juntas were forming in Spanish America in a bid for independence meant that seeking peace with the Spanish was received all too readily. Now France looked to quickly move east to seize upon Prussia’s troubles in Britain, but once again Napoleon became mired in political upheaval. The mutiny of the Polish legions had inflamed tensions once again, as tolerance for Napoleon’s absolute rule dwindled. Soon, it appeared, concessions would have to be made, or their would be blood on the streets of Paris once more. From his residence in Reims, Bonaparte urged his government to move at once to attack Prussia, but the ministers would hear none of it. Seeing the war as an excuse to avoid answering for his perceived crimes, French officials would not see Napoleon wriggle off the hook again. Frustratingly France’s legions stood idle while their golden opportunity passed them by.

Prussian Account: Part 80

Hermann sat down with his hardtack and smelled it; not much except a slight smell of flour. He knocked the biscuit on the railing and made some hard banging sounds, like wood hitting wood. Hermann sighed and took a bite of it, after a few attempts a slight piece came off and Hermann swallowed it. It was hard to bite through but the bits that did make it down his stomach actually tasted decent.

“BOY!” A shout came from behind. Hermann turned and saw Herr Straube, the boatswain, approach him. “Captain needs some wine in his cabin, go fill it up!” Herr Straube didn’t mess about and Hermann ran to the captains cabin with the hardtack in hand. When Hermann entered, the room was filled with captains from the other ships of the fleet.

“Dammit Herr Straube, I think we can fill our cups ourselves.” Admiral Gesner cursed but allowed Hermann to continue. Hermann removed the empty pitcher and refilled it, he appeared inside the captain’s quarters once more.

“Cagliari is too well fortified! The Sardinians may not be a threat on the sea, as you said admiral. However Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia, it would be suicide to try and assault it, besides they would most likely execute all the prisoners the moment we appeared in their harbour!” Captain Sternberger shouted to the other men. Captain Gesner stood hunched over a map of Sardinia.

“We could send the Sardinians an ultimatum, Hand over the prisoners or we bomb Cagliari with our mortars.” Captain Stuhr proposed.

“And have the whole world think we slaughter innocent civilians!? It would be a disgrace on our honor as Prussian, a slight on the crown we represents!” Captain Oehlenschläger shouted offended.

“Admiral Winkelmann did the same against the British at Portsmouth, why should we not?” Captain Günzburg chimed in.

“This is different. That was a tactical move to eliminate the british ship building facilities. Cagliari is a populated urban center. It would be immoral, unchristian even, to bomb such a place.” Captain Oehlenschläger protested again. A sudden thumping noise made the room quite down, Admiral Gesner looked up and stopped the banging of his sextant against the table.

“Captain Sternberger is right. We can’t risk the prisoners’ lives. We will attempt a rescue mission to save the poor sods from the Sardinians’ prison.” Admiral Gesner concluded and looked around to see if anyone had something to say.

“Admiral, with all due respect would it now be wiser to try and ransom the prisoners from the Sardinians? This way we would be able to avoid the risk and potential consequences if the operation should fail.” Captain Oehlenschläger tried to persuade Admiral Gesner. A large bang of Admiral Gesner’s fist made the captain shut up.

“We’re in a war, Goddammit, we have to offend someone! To hell with the Sardinians and their diplomacy. I’ve been charged with getting our boys back and I will do so, even if I have to kill every last man, women and child on that godforsaken island!” Captain Gesner was red faced and he loosened his collar to breathe in the tight uniform.

“Admiral Gesner, sir. I think you may be a bit drunk. Would it not be best if…” Captain Stuhr began but had to pause to duck from the cup of wine flying his way.

“Out! All of you!” Admiral Gesner shouted and the captain left the cabin with respectful nods. Admiral Gesner sunk down in his chair and looked at the door with a burnt out look. Hermann looked at Captain Gesner with a worried look. _Did he mean me too?_

“Why are you still here, lad?” Admiral Gesner asked, not as angry as before. Hermann snapped out of his thought stream and moved towards the door.

“Sorry, sir, I’ll leave at once.” Hermann took the door handle.

“No, stay.” The admiral called, sounding something in between melancholy and authoritative. Hermann let go of the door and walked up to the map.

“It’s funny isn’t it?” Admiral Gesner asked.

“What, sir?” Hermann asked back and wished he has left.

“All these years and diplomacy is what has brought me to my knees.” Admiral Gesner scuffed and reached for the cup that wasn’t there anymore.

“Godfuck… Would you be a good lad and get that one for me?” Admiral Gesner mumbled, Hermann quickly got the cup and filled it for Admiral Gesner. “Thank ye, lad.” The admiral raised his cup. “To our boys in Cagliari, Devil take them.” Admiral Gesner emptied the cup and leaned back in the chair. Hermann stood for a moment and didn’t know what to say, he looked around the quarters. Piles of books filled the cabin, everywhere you looked there were mountain of books in all shapes and sizes. Hermann was snapped out of his stream of thought again when Admiral Gesner suddenly rose from his seat with a sudden motion.

“I have it!” He shouted. “Boy give me _A tale of Artur Goldberger_ it’s the red book on the third pile.” Hermann found the book and gave it to the admiral who practically ripped it from his hands. Admiral Gesner opened it and skimmed through a few pages.

“What is it, sir?” Hermann asked.

“Our salvation. Be a good lad and get the fine captains of the fleet in here again.” Admiral Gesner shouted happily.

My report Commander Lionheart:

To start, I would like to formally apologise for not making a report for the last episode. I was caught off-guard by your upload and was very busy the next day, thus not able to create the report. Regardless, there was some progress in regards to the capturing of the British Isles and as always, I will deliver my advice.

1. Tear down Oxford - Commander, I say with a heavy heart that I believe you will need to tear down Oxford University in order to re-establish order. Clamour for reform is certainly contributing to the unhappiness penalty you are currently having to endure. As the rebels successfully retook London, they are no longer considered rebels hence you are susceptible to another round of rebels spawning in 2-3 turns. I advise making haste in resolving the unhappiness problems as unless you want to ferry more reinforcements from Amsterdam, you may end up in a situation where you lack the necessary strength to rapidly close down the British front. Keep this war short.

2. Reorientation of armies - You touched on this briefly but I feel I could help add to your thoughts regarding where to put generals. Generals, in their rawest most valuable form, help ensure an army doesn't succumb to attrition and is able to heal on the go while advancing. This being said, I advise you to reorientate your armies where a single general unit leads up to 3 armies. Packs of 3 armies are effective in the auto resolves and a general between 3 armies can help boost replenishments across the field. Furthermore, I advise you don't have any armies within a settlement be accompanied by a general as the healing factor is already provided to the armies by the settlements. As you said, it's more import for the attacking armies to be the ones with generals.

3. Be ready to end Scotland - With the Great Withering occurring to the remaining British forces, I recommend you pull an additional army or 2 from the mainland and have them be ready to assault Edinburgh once the attrition levels out with their economic output/the potential winter attrition that could affect some British forces.

This concludes my report. I still expect the collapse of the nation of Britain to occur within this winter and hopefully a full stack of militia will be ready to keep London under control while your forces sail on for Sardinia. Until then though, keep up the good work.

The problem with fighting on more than one front is hat you must fight on more than one front! You have committed to Britain now and are suffering for it, you must now follow through and crush them. Send more reinforcements and wipe them out, take the casualties, suffer the winter attrition and start the spring campaign season as the victor in the British Isles. This will free up troops to take on the two giants on the continent. Forget appeasing Spain, they have no interest in fighting properly, let France invade and tie them down from the north, and when they start to do this invade from the south and do the same. This will enable a territory grab, ergo revenue and also achieve a second front against France in the end. Back to Austria. Be ready after winter to take Kiev, just use the other forces as holding forces for when Austria counter with their own invasions. Kiev and the surrounding lands must be taken, use then the spare forces at your disposal to take the Ionian peninsula and link with your Eastern front. Austria will then be nicely encircled.

I say fight the British battle otherwise there is a high chance that the majority of army in London that is REALLY low on unit numbers will be lost.

Dear Lionheart,

From the moment you took England, I suggested to take down Oxford and get a full stack of militia(militia is very good in keeping order and you can recruit 10 units a turn in a single city(cross means instant)) in London, if you had done that, there would have been no rebellion, which would have made this a lot easier. So please get rid of Oxford and get those militia out! This is a recommendation for every major city you take!
If a city has cooled down you can dispatch some of these militia to increase your income again, you definately can do this in the regions you had from the start.

Fight this battle, your other 2 stack next to london won't be touched so you can chase down the small stack that is heading for Scotland. You should be able to lay some ambushes close to liverpool and blokade the bridges that are up there. with your 4 armies you must be able to hold those brits trapped.

An Idea is to, when the attrition got through them, let them go to Ireland. This will split their forces so you can crush the remaining, after which you will trap them in Ireland an finish them of. with only a tax building in Ireland, they won't replenish well. (Haven't checked if it is a market or a supply depot in Ireland.

As always, keep up the good work, and please use my advise sometimes.

(Letters from the front)

My own dear Brother,

I received your letter yesterday, Andreas, and while I'm glad to hear all is well at home, I am troubled hearing about the War in the West.
Spain has collapsed again? The King has refused repeated Peace Offerings from Sardinia? A revolt in England? All of this is easily settled...
1) Pull our troops from England, continue the blockade, and leave them to their island.
2) Move those troops to Navarre, take Catalonia, and open a second front against the French ourselves. Set up protectorates as we go, just as we did in Brittany.
3) Make Peace with Sardinia. We have our port in the Mediterranean in Palma de la Morca. And if we take Barcelona, there's another! Sardinia is not our enemy. Austria and France are! England is contained, leave them to their lands. Without a navy, they are nothing!

Politics, Andreas! I do believe the goal of politicians is to take something simple and complicate it.
Spain has shown themselves to be weak. They cannot even defend themselves! They aren't good allies. But weak allies are better than none. We should try to get Naples as allies as well. They have no love for Austria!
Meanwhile, we do nothing. The clock is ticking! Winter is coming! We should be attacking the "Kiev pocket", and eliminating the Austrians from our midst! I'm not the only one thinking that way. I want to push South, and get out of this region before another Winter strikes us.

My apologies for this brief letter, my dear little Brother. But I have much to do this day. I'll write more later.
Oh, about your wondering if I'll get home for Christmas again. I hate to say probably not. As I had Christmas leave last year, and others didn't, this year it's their turn. We must be fair about this sort of thing! But I can probably get another leave in January or February. And I would prefer that for one simple reason; it gets me out of the severe cold for awhile. As for that thing you asked for, I will have a look around, and try to find one. Had you asked sooner, it would have been easy to get, but the Russians are beaten and gone from this region. Still, I will try, my dear Andreas.

Your big Brother,
Markus

UGH!!  This episode was hard to watch as what I was predicting in previous episodes is happening now.  I advised that you avoid invading England in favor or dropping armies off in Spain to open a second front.  I outlined that the war with England would bog down armies that would be much better served on the mainland.  Well....crud happens. My advice is to placate the lands that you currently control in England and then smash Scotland, ending the English for good.  Your already half pregnant so see it through.Once complete, I would advise taking 2-3 armies from Britain and drop them off in Spain to open a second front with the French.  You need to erode the French economy and distract a few of their armies away from the Eastern front.  This can all be done during the winter months and once Spring hits you could pull those armies away and drop them onto the underbelly of Austria to assist in taking their capitol.  I do not see an argument against taking these steps.By the way, I vote to auto resolve.
