👉💾SAVE this for garden planning! What is crop rotation?? You may have come across this gardening term before. Simply put, you are rotating the placement of specific crops within your beds.

But… there’s more. There is a way to do crop rotation that with keep your garden healthiest and most productive.

Year One:
Brassicas and leafy greens:
Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, mustards, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, radicchio, spinach, other leafy greens.
Year two:
Legumes and alliums:
Peas, beans, onions, shallots, leeks, garlic.
Year three:
Cucurbits and solanums:
Cucumbers, melons, squashes, peppers, eggplants, and tomatoes.
Year four:
Root Crops: Potatoes, carrots, parsnips, beets.

Crop rotation really all comes down to soil. As the plants grow, they extract nutrients in the soil. They also may attract pests and problems to a specific area. By rotating the crops by plant type/family you are ensuring that the soil does not become depleted and that you do not get reoccurring problems.

But… there’s even more. I realize that a lot of us do not have expansive gardens. You might only have a particular spot in your garden with sufficient sunlight for tomatoes. In this case, you might want to consider moving your soil (i.e. dig up a wheelbarrow full from one area and switching it to the other).
