I deep dive into developer salaries in California. An analysis comparing salaries between Python, PHP, Java, JavaScript, Ruby, C++ and C# developers.

How much does experience impact salaries. What developer specialization makes more money? Data-scientist, web developers, full stack developers, front end developers ...?

I really appreciate that fact that you always get to the point..You make complex things simple.. it's like you disentangle the crazily entangled strings with so much ease .like so smooth..that it amazes me..

Your always spot on. Its funny how everyone on youtube or these websites say "learn this language", but they never understand that the IT business is worldwide - its not only the US - and in each region the language you need, and technology used, is different. Its great that you reach out and talk about things in a more wordwide scale. Here in Brazil, for example, web development is "the bomb". React native is almost a must, and front end and back end (including php) is the way to go. People are running from Java and native development (in spite of me loving Android and Kotlin). Shout out from Pernambuco Brazil!

The distribution problems that web applications solve is why I'm attracted to the web stack. The ability to reach customers across the globe is truly a powerful skill. Its not about the money, its not about the code, its about what you can do with it. Above and beyond that, the limitless infrastructure you can build as long as you have a strong foundation. I absolutely love the infinite potential offered by web development. I'm determined to master the craft. Whatever it takes.

So what I got from this: at least for the San Francisco area, salary-wise your programming role and language don‘t matter that much.

The trick to remember is that the Python guy is the Python guy. The PHP guy is also the Javascript guy... and the SQL guy...and the integration guy... the server admin guy... and part of the UX team... and probably team lead.

Thanks for the info Stefan!
Stefan, can you perhaps also make a video on burnout in programming? I notice a lot of people, both from the university route and the self-taught route, have an unhealthy working and learning attitude and those 3-month 12-14hr day bootcamps certainly don't help in that regard. I heard people from bootcamps also finishing the thing and being so tired and fed up of coding that they don't continue coding for half a year.
What's your perspective on that? What would you recommend people who are learning to program to do and what to avoid to be healthy, happy and productive?

Maybe this is just my area (large midwestern city), but I think the hype around Python is a little overrated, at least for jobs. When I search for "Python jobs" in my area, like 70% of the hits (this is a conservative estimate) are actually DevOps, data science, system admins, electrical engineers, etc... i.e. positions that require significant skill sets outside of software development, years of experience/advanced degrees, or positions that really aren't even full time software developers at all. There are actually very few "pure Python developer" jobs. I bet there are more PHP jobs actually.

Actually geographic limitation is not that big of an issue now specially for web developers

Decent expose, and you hit it -- the average and different companies vary. Furthermore, a difference of 2-3 grand a year is (post taxes) around 60 bucks biweekly. It's all the same to me, but thanks again; appreciate your work. Bottom line is WHAT do you want to do now?

I really would like to hear your comments on how you think web assembly will play out. I'm a C++ dev with over 10 years of experience, and I'm interested in web development for my own project, and I'm thinking of creating a whole website with C++ and Qt. My knowledge in regular web dev is very shallow, and I never used a web framework before (like vue and similar), so this would be a fun experiment, I believe. What do you think?

In other words: There's a trade-off between learning something I never dealt with on a professional level (the current web dev tools), and the very efficient, and new wasm that uses C++ that I'm an expert at.

PS: The backend is already C++ due to performance requirements. The question is about the frontend.

I like the cinema effect of your video--adds a lot of gravitas.

easily C++ devs bank the most out of any other dev out there. thats because there arent enough C++ devs out there and the demand is growing due to AI and robotics, IoT, and the core blockchain

Hello Stefan, what is the age factor for a person over 40 who has just started getting his hands dirty in front end programming from the perspective of HR?

Hi Stefan, great video, great content. It is of the highest quality.
It would be interesting to see how freelancers compare to in house developers salary and gross revenue wise. These are both different directions, some mix them, some stay in house, some only freelance. I am sure there is merit to all of them.
Furthermore, today comparing your job opportunities only based on per hour basis might mislead a lot of people, I think your content outlines exactly why! Thank you!
