AH-1Z Viper is faster than an AH-64 Apache Helicopter

The Bell AH-1Z Viper is a modern version of the AH-1 Cobra, the first ever attack helicopter. The modern version is also called Zulu Cobra in reference to its variant letter. The latest AH-1Z Viper is a result of the H-1 helicopter upgrade program for the US Marine Corps that was launched by the US Government in 1996. It is one of the most powerful, capable and advanced helicopters flying today. The Viper is one nasty bird. It carries 16 Hellfire missiles like the AH-64 Apache Helicopter, but unlike the AH-64 Apache Helicopter, it can be armed with air-to-air AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles. It has 70 mm Hydra rockets and sports a 20mm Gatling gun. It can fly up to 20,000 feet high with a 250-mph top speed. That’s faster than an AH-64 Apache Helicopter.

As a former "Cobra guy", and I certainly love the platform - it is not a match for the Apache from an airframe perspective. Bolting on an extra engine and a couple more rotor blades doesn't put it in the Apache's league....

Chris Durham was a guy that grew up 2 houses down the road from me. He was a Helicopter Pilot, and an Officer. Not SURE what his Highest rank achieved was, but he was in for over 25 years. He's told me he's flown both of them, but he flew BlackHawks, AND he flew AH 64 Apache Longbows, whatever that is. He told me that knowing how they both flew, he actually liked the Whisky Cobra better (that's what he called it!)! He told me that ...what it COULD do the best, is Chopper Dogfighting. Taking Choppers in close to Ground contact, trees, other things that cause dangerous situations, and utilizing that to your best abilities. Staying out of their missile locks(?), Or cannon fire. Now this was about 6 years ago, and he told me he KNOWS that he could do more stunts in a Cobra, but he also said he could do the most in a British Lynx...whatever that is.

The Marine Corps appears to be confused about its mission. They are decommissioning several Marine Corps Air Wings. I have read that the CMC wants to have the Marine Air Wings be absorbed by the Navy. They have already started decommissioning Tank Battalion and Artillery Batteries.

Prefer the Zulu cobra in terms upgradable, cost, maintenance and versatile. Although Apache maybe be more advanced but still the price and maintenance is still issue.
And 2003 Iraq war, 1 Apache claim shit down by a farmer with a rifle but could be the electrical power issue..
