The Hammer races to Zion | The Matrix

The Hammer was the largest of all Zion Hovercraft in use. Was very upset to find that a lot of the cool scenes with it were often cut short so I decided to make a little compilation of my own.

I can't tell you how awesome it was to see what was effectively a ship that was 90% side characters getting to have one of the most badass sequences outside of the Matrix in the entire movie.

I thought it was humorously awesome how out of his element Morpheus seemed while Niobe was piloting. Despite him also being a hovership captain capable of piloting, Niobe's skills are so above anyone else's that even the stoic Morpheus starts to lose his cool trying to keep up

God damn I can never get enough of these scenes. The sense of urgency and the absolute unit that is the hammer. You really get a sense of how these machines work with how they have to manually divert power to specific disks, in order for the ship to avoid slamming into the walls. And the way the electricity multiplies to really let you know that the craft is stressing everything it has to compete with it's own mass inertia with every heavy turn. Stacked on top with the visuals of bullet tracers flying all over while they make their desperate escape. It really is eye candy.

I also love how when they smash through the door at the end, instead of just colliding dead center through the opening, they have her collide with the left door and the bottom half of the ship so that the cockpit makes it through the opening of the door without pulverizing the crew.

The best part is missing:
- Sir, holographic confirms. It's the Hammer, sir.
- How can that be?
- The ship is under attack, sustaining heavy damage. But at its present velocity, it’ll reach Gate 3 in twelve minutes.
- Sir, EMP could take out every sentinel.
- It’d take out more than that. It’d wipe out our entire defense system. […] EMP in there, we will lose the dock!
- But sir, we’ve already lost the dock.
- ... Open the gate.

The production value of this entire subplot is insane. Not just the CGI but how imaginative the storyboarding of each sequence is, the sound direction, the performances, etc. On paper, it's so over the top and yet every beat of its execution is on point.

Roland: “Holy, Christ. I didn’t know this ship could do that.”

Just shows that not only is Niobe a great Captain, but her piloting and tactical skills are level 11.

For me the learning moment was when Morpheus took the 2nd seat and complied with Niobe's commands without second-guessing her. I learned that even a great leader should step down and let other do their job sometimes, trust the specialists who aced their field.
