The Biggest Pro AND Con of Digital Inking

Here’s the thing about digital inking—it has the same massive advantage as its biggest downside. 🤔

If you're just getting into digital, like I was, you might find yourself redoing the same line over and over and over again… because you can! That’s the beauty of digital, right? You can smooth everything out, use cleaner brushes, and chase that "perfect" line until it’s exactly where you want it.

But here's the kicker—while it’s cool that you can refine endlessly, it can also drain your time and your creativity. I’ve spent hours trying to make things flawless, only to lose the love I had for the piece by the end of it. And honestly? The final drawing often doesn’t have the same energy. Perfection is overrated. If we wanted perfect lines, we’d all just render 3D models with outlines.

There’s a charm in imperfections, just like traditional media, and you can capture that same feel digitally if you let go of being perfect and embrace the mistakes.

Who else has fallen into this trap? Let me know! 👇

Longtime traditional artist here but digital added. When I get stuck or can’t find my move in a digital drawing, I go analog. It reopens the skill and remembrance of texture, and maneuvering my pencil to get the line quality I want. I might even photo that drawing and bring it in to continue working. So much can be found with just one brush, one color. True digitally as well as analog.

Pressure sensitive lines are awesome! Try it with a digital calligraphy brush.

Agree, ...Salvador Dalí is known for saying, "Have no fear of perfection, you'll never reach it.

Agree! Also I heard from a very good art teacher that you should learn to draw line at once without repeat and leave it as it is and move forward!

This is why I stopped lineart for the most part in general lol. It turns out better when I just clean up the sketch instead of actually lining it

That was exactly the thing I needed to hear now 😅 I’ve been trying to make it too perfect unaware that it’s way better a lil messy

i quit perfect lines a while ago, i prefer sketchy lines that are cleaned up a bit with an eraser tool, makes it look cool as hail

Didn't expect to see Punchline art, even with the recent attention she's been getting she feels like a pretty obscure character so nice to see more art of her.

That's mostly why i usually end up cleaning up the sketch instead and fix it up as I'm going, a clean lineart just has a certain feel, and a rougher lineart has a different feel, i try and go switching between the two depending on the piece I'm working on

Omg... so this is why my half-assed sketches look better than something I actually put time and effort into? Man...

That's why AI arts feels so dead like not alive... It's like a road without meaning and emotions... Empty
