101 English Learning Questions

In this video...

Good question:

“Is it possible to learn English alone?”

Well, yes.

That’s the simple answer.

A lot of people think I can't study English by myself... but there's no reason to think like that. Learning English is easy these days. Even alone. Especially by yourself, in my opinion.

I’ve got to be honest… in this modern age I don’t think english classes and teachers are effective. I taught classes for a long time… and one of the reasons I stopped and moved completely to online, self-paced learning is that I truly believe this is far, far more effective.

The argument for classes is that language is for social interaction...

… and therefore learning should be social.

Yes and no.

Social interaction is useful… as motivation, to get answers to questions, support and to share problems (and solutions) with others...

… and in the right kind of situation, to add PRESSURE to your learning.

Learning a language is simple.

It comes down to a two-step process: learn the language you need, then practise until it’s automatic.

There’s no reason you have to learn with people to do these two things. And in fact, there are far more effective ways to practise than just chatting aimlessly.

BUT

And here’s the but...

… we learn best and fastest when there is intense pressure to perform. How to learn English alone is pretty easy... but just keep this in mind.

You're one of the few people I've found (maybe the first actually) who has openly said that you can learn to speak a language, without conversing with natives. I've learned to speak French quite well; and I did it "alone." During the upper beginner phase I did practice a lot with another learner who was on the same level, but I can't see counting that as being any better than talking to myself. If anything it got me used to hearing bad French! As far as speaking in those conversations I still needed to depend on what I had learned and encountered on the internet because I knew that my counterpart would make plenty of mistakes (as did I, of course) in phonology, grammar, word choice etc.

I virtually never spoke with a native speaker of the language until after I had taught myself to articulate myself with the type of phrasing and pronunciation I observed online. Really I've hardly practiced with a francophone since then too. I think you're spot-on when you say that a little creativity can produce the right results.

I really enjoy your videos. I like them not inly because of the information I received from you, but for the way you use the language as a native speaker.

I really think that studying alone suits well for the introverts. it gives them opportunities to overcome their natural shyness and to take right pace when study. As for me, self study always gave me better results just because of those reasons you said in this video. So I totally agree with you. Thanks.

so fun to see so many people struggling to learn English. To me, it's mastering the basics, learning the sound system, connecting the sound and meaning and expanding your talks and conversation. Then you need to go out and start to talk as naturally as possible. Don't let your mind doubt what you are talking about.
