Behringer RD-9 vs. TR-909 vs. TR-8s // The Comparison // PLEASE READ NOTE IN DESCRIPTION!

Line out, no compression, EQing or FX
I tried to match the sounds as much as possible.

NOTE! For this clip the RD-9 was set to "enhanced mode" which wasn't my intention and doesn't make sense in a comparison video. I will repeat the comparison with the RD-9 set to original mode. The "enhanced mode" changes the sound heavily. I kindly ask you to excuse this mistake. (June 25th 2021)

Don't forget, for the price difference you can also add a rack full of Klark Teknik Pultec and 1176 clones to process the drums.

The RD-9 sounds nice, but I still prefer the TR-8S as no need to use a mixer for panning, EQ, compression and effects. It’s all in the box. Much better for a small home/live setup.

😮 I cannot believe the RD-9 sounds that much better?!! WOW!! Behringer absolutely knocked this out of the park!! For sure getting one!! Thanks for the awesome comparisons!! 😁🐀

I never thought I'd say this, but I think I like the behringer over the OG 909. So shoot me. It sounds more punchy and better defined. As if some filter has lifted compared to the 909.

In this demo I actually prefer RD-9. Sounds like there's a blanket over the 909.

I wouldn't say that the RD9 sounds better, i think that the 909 still sounds dirtier and fatter, but the RD9 sounds like a new instrument that comes fresh from the factory, components are brand new and it's been designed for today producers that maybe don't want to use the separate outputs and spend $$ in external effects, so it's ready to go as it is.

I think that when people will use the separate outputs and process each sound with equalization and effects, the difference will be negligible.

That's where Roland failed us with their two clones, and that's why sounding exactly like a 909 is not so important for the RD9.

The RD-9 is quieter and tuned differently (in some parts), aside from that great video man. There does seem to be some warmth and depth missing from the RD-9 compared to the OG but it's probably more suited to a 2021 production sound for that exact reason.

Rd-9 sounds better then the original, what an achievement of Behringer... they are going to sell lots of them...

rd-9 is brighter... wasnt expecting for it. Original has that mid snap .. unbeatable. TR-8s has that "perfect" undistorted low end which i do not expect to listen on a 909. RD-9 is the way to go :)

My tr8s is always accompanied by my analog bugbrand stereo compressor. Kaboom!

The RD-9 seems to have the most punch. that kick is insane, it really punches hard! now I hear the difference between them all clearly. the TR-8s seems a little soft on the edges of the sounds. like it's samples. but, the TR-8s can be manipulated in a lot of ways, . I think I'm going to buy the RD-9 even though I have the TR8s. I have put a few samples in it and it's insane! but I do want the traditional sound that is analog.

RD -9 sound like a 909 after a spar weekend and a facial a new clean sound for 2021 with extras. TR is the Dogs . TR 8s is great to digitally smooth for me though. I prefer the Snare on the RD 9 to the others fresh.

I am a producer and have just as Much love for the OG Roland, as outside Of two Technic Turntables, Their Off Branded Sp 505 Groove sampling workstation Is STILL by todays Standards One hell of a sampler, drum machine- sequencer, It taught about like REAL wave editing, Had a Feature ive only on that machine called microscope edit). But yeah one time I had set up a six hour party set ALL playing out of that one machine, Not to mention 16 on board ROLAND STEREO effects, . At times i used it as a peice of my home theatre to delay my Back rear speakers to give my theatre a more movie theater sound with the slight phase shift and delay. Or I used it Constantly as a Preamp to My SURE PG58, greta performance mic, but Not bad studio Guy either, ....

''I was told No ones gonna get off the dancefloor because its not an 808''. further, IMAGINE WHERE BHERINGER COULD BE ( the clones are DOPE right, ) But with all that TALENT why not make some thing BHERINGER, something totally NEW innovative. Instead of COPYING everyone elses Idea and finding Cheaper Materials Parts and sadly Ultimately, sound Quality- this is Comming from a man who has The Pro 1 ( bheringers), The CRAVE, The TD3, The CAT, and THE Rd6 also a Multiples MOd unit and there remake of the PCA3 mixer

I am all about putting better equipment in the hands of those who could not previously afford however, Many of us musicians develope a certain Bias or nostalgia for the companies that we have resonated with. I worry that Bheringer is Only worried about cranking out so Much thing that their may be GIANT oversights.

I.e. ( how hard would have been to integrate Midi parameter changes) so that when paired with say The SLMK3 that has *lanes of automation and can externally control ANY synth)
It would be the Cats MEOW to be able to do Automated filter sweeps and modulation the way that I am able to with say My Korg Minilogue ( highly suggested for a first synth- that or crave if you dont have the roughly 500$, but the Minilogue can do things that would normally Take Modular set up, there is Much beneath the hood, Korg knew what they were doing, . When The Minilogue came out, It had Won the German Red Dot Engineering award, ( a very prestigious award), and then the Minilogue xd, then the minlogue ''', then the Prologue... I think Korg saw how many people were buying the minilogue and they got a little MS20/ Nostalgia Fever.
People claim it sounds metalic and i will agree one can make it sound metalic however it has a PHENOM of a filter section, and LFO options, a Hidden Pong game- how cool is that shit?
and as an Owner of one now for shoot I guess that did come out a WHILE ago. Its one of my absolute Favorite subractive ANALOGUE synths. I think paired with the wavestate....ooh they would do damage.

But the minilogue was also the first synth ive seen Like super easily Integrate into PC routing, as far as being able to play a midi peice through say ( ableton) and have your synth play it under the hood- that was an awesome feature to me.

But where i was going in this ass comment was i think bheringer would have some dangerously wicked equipment if they even focused an 8th of their R and D or whatever to make something NEW AND NEEDED>>>>
perhaps A DAWLESS DAW. where all effects built in, perhaps a built in sequencer and sound effects.

i think you didn't matched the same kick pitch on the rolands and the B ( maybe due to enhanced mode ? ) so it doesn't have the same bass

Also remember, this is probably a TR-909 that is at least 30 years old vs a brand spanking new Rd9

Remember, in a complete mix, it’s nearly impossible to tell the differences

Still rather get the TR-8s as you get 808 sounds too and it sounds closer to the 909, yes the RD-9 kick drum hits harder but the hats suffer the same problem as sampled 909 hats, they just sound to harsh to me, the RD-9 sounds like its been compressed internally already

Nice demo. RD-9 is impressive. Some differences around the 7:30 mark when switching from the 909 to the TR8S, snappier envelopes on the real 909 and RD-9 but lots more parameters for tweaking on the TR8S to make it slam harder.
