In order to sample sediment, researchers only drilled through an Antarctic ice shelf. They found, instead, animals that were not supposed to be there.

Researchers drilled through 900 meters of ice in the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf, located on the South Eastern Weddell Sea, during an exploratory survey. Very few animals have ever been observed in these conditions at a distance of 260 km from the open ocean, under complete darkness and with temperatures of -2.2 ° C.
But this study is the first to discover the existence of stationary animals attached to a boulder on the sea floor - similar to sponges and potentially several previously unknown species. Huw Griffiths, a marine biogeographer from the British Antarctic Survey and lead author of the study, says a team of geologists was trying to collect a mud sample from beneath the ice shelf but kept hitting a large boulder. The team deployed their equipment to see what the hold up was, he said, with a GoPro camera attached.
