Yes you are so right. When volatility is below 15, it is very dangerous to sell naked, always trade credit spreads.

Is the advice to sell narrower put spreads when VIX is low so that you can sell more contracts to collect more premium, or is it so less buying power is used (i.e. you sell same no. of contracts as you would if VIX was higher)? Cheers!

The Vix has dropped from 20+ to 16ish in the last week or so. I'm trading 32% of my portfolio margin. Should I be concerned about this sudden drop in volatility or do you think I have enough cushion? Does the rate of change in volatility indicate anything important?

David, my biggest takeaway is protect your money is most important, as what does it do to gain the world but lose your life in the end... Basically, make all the money and then in the end blow your account out....
