The 5 Major Bearings in a Volvo M41 J type Overdrive Transmission

Welcome to another tech talk, this one on the rebuild of the M41 Laycock Overdrive in a 1967 Volvo Amazon P220 station wagon.

I count 21 small rollers in the countershaft (also called layshaft) end bearings and 14 medium rollers in the input shaft.
For some reason the M41 countershaft steel rod (upon which the bearings rotate) is bigger than the M40 countershaft (16mm M40, 18mm M41) however the roller bearings and thrust washers seem to be identical between each version.

And as always I get my parts from VP-autoparts as they have the best selection and pricing for your vintage Volvo. Not a paid sponsorship, just a happy customer these past years 🤓

In my experience the M40 and M41 were always noisy in certain gears. The M400 and M410 seems more quiet, but are getting really rare (Volvo 164) and I do not think they are a drop in replacement either.
