RESINA
A graduate of the Music Academy in Gdańsk, Warsaw-based Cellist Karolina Rec has been active in Poland's independent music scene since the late ‘00's. Working solo under the name RESINA, in 2016 she signed a record deal with legendary British label FatCat Records’ 130701 imprint (home to the likes of Max Richter, Hauschka, Dustin O’Halloran and Jóhann Jóhannsson). A self-titled debut solo album was released in September 2016 to an excellent press response, with Uncut marveling that it “tramples the boundaries of genre... coaxes a rich kaleidoscope of immersive sounds and echoes of Arvo Part, Eno and Richard Skelton, and... a hint of Sigur Ros' vaulting grandeur”; and The Quietus calling it “strikingly atmospheric... an evocative sound-world which moves from dreamily luminous to unnervingly dark... evoking an often intensely moving sense of longing.”

Firmly based in an improvisatory use of the cello, Resina’s work is a result of experiments with simple electronic tools, yet always marked by the desire to explore non-obvious characteristics of the instrument. Throughout the past year, she has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to perfectly use these same tools during her live performances. Though minimalist in form, Resina suggestively builds tension and hypnotic, addictive dramaturgy. The way in which she shapes the narrative of her live sets translates into the intensity of impact for the listener.

Prior to the album’s release, Karolina made her international debut at 130701’s showcases at Tallinn Music Week and The Brighton Festival (which she headlined to a rapturous response), whilst Polish live recordings took place during sessions for Gdansk Boiler Room and at Polish Radio 3 (as part of popular music program - ”Program Alternatywny”). Following the album’s release and some excellent reviews - among others in The Quietus, Tiny Mix Tapes and Uncut - Karolina also performed at Unsound Festival; in Poland’s National Audiovisual Institute; and also recorded a session for national Polish Television (TVP Kultura). Shows in the UK followed at London (Daylight Music at the Union Chapel) and Bristol (alongside Sarah Neufeld) – both met with fantastic responses.

In 2016, Resina also signed a publishing contract with Mute Songs resulting in her joining a group of her favorite composers such as Jóhann Jóhannsson, Swans, Max Richter, Nick Cave, Ben Frost, Ian William Craig, Raime, Mira Calix, Stefan Wesolowski and others.
