Storing Dahlia Tubers

Today’s educational video on storing dahlia tubers over winter is an experiment, so please bear that in mind! In late 2019, we dug our dahlia tubers up to separate and prepare them for storage until the following spring. We stored them traditionally using boxes with layers of wood chips and newspaper, and even sprinkled them all with sulphur. When we did our mid-winter check, we still found a lot of mold. So we asked our friend Farmer Gowan at Fortunate Farm in Casper, CA to see how she stores her dahlias, and she recommended a new technique. We took the tubers that weren’t moldy out of their boxes and placed them on top of a pallet in our seed house. We stuffed straw in the cracks of the pallets, then covered the tubers with wood chips that had sulphur sprinkled mixed in, and finally covered them with dry soil [this particular soil is from Fox Farm]. Check us out in a couple months when we uncover & replant these babies back in the ground!
