One of my buddies in HS ran a 4.22 mile, made me realize some people are just different.

Thanks for the advice. Right now, I’m trying to learn the best way to run a mile, currently at a 4:51. That third lap always gets me lol.

One of the biggest things I learned was to controls your breathing. I always start a race way too anxious, and taking long relaxed breaths in the beginning of the race helps you to run relaxed and conserve energy for that final 400

yup keep up the grind during my freshman cross country season i’d say i was about 5:38 but now towards the end of track i’m at 4:53. it’s a process you gotta trust

Good strat. My strategy for running a sub 5:00 is to try to hit no faster than 1:10 for the first mile, and then cruise comfortably under 1:15 for the second and third lap. You can def start building up the last 400, but I pick up pace a little bit with 600 to go and then proceed to build up the past 400. The biggest challenge is maintaining it for the last 200 meters. Btw this is for people to break 5:00 for their first. Hope this helps someone

Congrats man!

I do wanna say tho that while your advice is good for what you run, it is objective to your type of training. I run the Paavo system w/ intervals, and a big part of that system is going out hard and holding said pace for as long as possible. That training has led me to run 4:19, but lower less intense training is really based on what you think is right according to how you feel and race.

I recommend if you try racing the mile more often, to wear a more aggressive shoe like the Nike dragonfly over the vaporflys. They allow you to dig in more while still getting the bounce of zoom x foam

The toughest goal for me this season was breaking 4:40, it took a lot of work and my new coach this season was trash, but I ran a 4:37 and went from being 8th on the 3rd lap to 2nd on the last with a 64.3 last lap and a 2:14 last 800, so yeah don't go out hard save it for the last 800 more like 400 tbh, good luck out there runners!

that’s super impressive omg. i can’t even run a full mile 🥲 but i might start training to be a runner. (i’m more of a swimmer and running isn’t a huge part of training lol)

In a couple months I got down from 9:40 to 7:15, I’m pretty proud and rn I’m working on my stamina and decreasing my time! I’ll hit 5 sub eventually with enough practice :)

That’s awesome!! My fastest mile in high school was 4:52. I’ve always wanted to get back into running but the body doesn’t work like it used to.

Props to you man. I hope to break 5:00 next years, although I doubt it will happen.
