Medical doctor, former elite GB triathlete and Ironman UK winner Dr Tamsin Lewis tells her long COVID experience and shares her knowledge on rebuilding health in the second episode of Viridian Talks series.

Exhaustion is one of the common, persistent symptoms of the illness.

Guest speaker Dr Tam shares her personal experience of fatigue, how to identify the symptoms, why it’s different to chronic fatigue syndrome or ME, and the impact on sleep.

She says: “The more extensive the infection in terms of its initial effects on you, the more likely you are going to have fatigue and a longer time to recovery.”

Dr Tam contracted Covid-19 in March last year, weeks ahead of the country’s initial lockdown – unaware of what lay ahead of her.

Listen to this fascinating and insightful discussion on her approach to recovering from post viral fatigue.

The Viridian Talks series aim to educate, inform and inspire people towards healthier futures and lifestyle choices by sharing discussions with leading health experts.

We can take a pro-active step to managing self-care for ourselves and families by raising awareness of valuable community resources such as Health Food Stores, which promote health and wellness and offer ethical and natural solutions.

You say that it's different from ME/CFS and then list the exact symptoms we experience. Just because ME/CFS hasn't gotten proper attention, doesn't mean it's any less debilitating. It's the same thing.

I thought I was over COVID. I had gotten out of quarantine and returned to work, feeling okay.

But then the fatigue returned. I felt miserable. I felt incapable of interaction or of enjoying life; I just wanted to sleep.

Then the fatigue went away again. It comes and goes.

It feels like I'm in this Post Viral Fatigue part now of Long Covid and only just realised the other day that it reminds me of when my central nervous system used to crash from over training, which I believe has been called Red S now in the sporting world. It's very similar, except I used to recover much quicker when I had overtrained, around 2 weeks. It must have something to do with our mitochondira not being able to function properly, like not sustaining energy production. I am at a point now where I'm starting to think leaky gut syndrome 'might' be the cause of Long Covid. One thing that happened recently was having a bowel purge from too much Sauerkraut for a week and then all my symptoms stopped for a week, only returning very very slightly. It's just fatigue now, which can be crushing when set off.

Not true. Most of us who had mild covid have more sever long haulers syndrome. The ones that had a severe first covid are mostly recovered. I have two groups with thousands of long haulers and that is the numbers.
