As a former men's specialist/haberdasher for Barneys New York, all of these style tips are 100% legit.
Especially less is more. Too many brands going on makes your audience hate you.

I'm a frag com guy and have a lot of fragrances. The general feeling is as you said regarding amount of fragrance. However, recently designer, perfumer Tom Ford said he advises to wear plenty. Of course he sells it and the more you use the more you buy.
