Cattail Down Jacket Solo Overnight

Показать описание
Greg treks back to the bush on a solo overnight adventure, builds a bushcraft debris shelter, and shows us how to DIY a cattail down jacket.

Greg is a self-taught survivalist from Canal Flats, British Colombia, who, since he was a boy, has read nearly every book on the topic. When he is not out in the wilderness, he is a professional dry-waller. He started his first bow drill fire when he was thirteen and spent the next forty years learning bushcraft and studying plants and edibles. He has even developed some of his own survival techniques and is a skilled hunter with both a bow and a slingshot.

Appreciate that you talk about the mistakes most won’t reveal.

You could truly see the excitement in his eyes when he said "it's going to get cold" it's all about perspective.

Most miserable night ever. I know the feeling. Had a similar experience once... I went for a day hike. About 15km. But I started a bit late and it was harder than I expected. It was a lovely, sunny early Spring day. I had a good jacket, a lighter, a pocket knife, a tin of stew, and plenty of water. I was about 10km in when it started getting dark and I realised I didn't bring a torch. I wasn't worried about being lost, I knew where I was, but I was worried about falling off a cliff in the dark, so I decided to camp till morning.
It was already dusk, so I didn't have time to build a shelter. I found a spot under a big tree, a sandy bar by the river. It doesn't snow here, but it can get to low single digits in early Spring on clear nights. Cold enough to frost the grass. So I figured the tree would help shelter me from dew. Don't have to worry about bears, either. Except those pesky drop bears.
So I built a fireplace, and scraped together enough leaves to make a bed right next to the fire, and gathered enough wood for the night. Ate my stew, and settled in for the night staring at the stars...
Except about midnight, it got _really_ cold. I was freezing.
So what I did was take one of the large rocks from the fireplace, put it inside my jacket, and curl up around it in foetal position. That kept me warm enough for about half an hour of sleep before I had to wake up to tend the fire and swap rocks. And my feet were icy, so I'd actually stand in the coals to warm up my boots.
Anyway, this went on all night. Longest night of my life, ever. Looking at the sky, waiting for the sun to rise, spooning a hot rock...
Misadventures are fun... When they're over. :)

The “cover photos” scene is priceless. You should be a model Gregg! You might not be a model in that way but you certainly are a role model! When I find a husband I hope he’s as knowledgeable and handy as you!

Your humor about poking branches, campfire placement and the lumpy jacket is naturally refreshing and enjoyable.

Another friendly reminder to watch through the ads and not to skip them. Every little bit helps to keep Greg's channel going!

He ia so confident, calm and self reliant, his scruffy looks and way he talks, video editing is simple and not annoying, yet quite creative, everything was so interesting to watch, you are awesome

One thing I love about these videos is you explain what you're doing, why you're doing it and some of the things you've learned from not doing it. One thing that annoys me about a lot of bushcraft videos is they're always silent with no talking about why they're doing something. Keep up the good work!
