For generations, Ebony and Jet magazines were synonymous with black culture and the black experience. The two publications were founded right in Chicago with their founder making history while amassing an enormous empire. That empire is no more.

Spoke with a lady that used to work in graphic design for Ebony. She said it was awesome to work there and that it was a family.

She cited however that the daughter of the late Mr. Johnson just didn’t have the same vision nor really knew how to run his empire. She focused more on the glitz and glam side of the business, prioritized Jet Magazine, and had a leadership style of high exclusivity and burning bridges. A lot of employees left.

What was a powerful cultural force for over 70+ years went up in smoke in a shockingly short period of time.
