S1 – Ep 337 – Cathcart – The Biltong Capital of South Africa!

Our visit to Cathcart was an adventurous journey, navigating a rugged and rocky gravel road from Hogsback. Despite the bumpy ride, the scenery along the way was breathtaking. On this road, we stumbled upon the magnificent Sam Meyer Dam with its grandeur captivating us so much that I couldn't resist capturing it with my drone. Upon reaching Cathcart, we were delighted to discover that this town held the title of being the Biltong Capital of South Africa. Our first order of business was to get some authentic, fatty biltong, and true to its reputation, it satisfied our taste buds with its delectable flavour. Cathcart revealed its rich history through its charming old buildings, monuments and churches. While the main station building had been destroyed, we thought the goods shed was still in use, although we weren't sure. Another highlight was our visit to the Bus Yard Art, where we marvelled at the incredible creations fashioned out of scrap metal by a talented artist. It was a testament to the transformative power of art and left us in awe of the artist's ingenuity and creativity. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #easterncape #cathcart

When we were in Cathcart, children and teachers were cleaning the town. Each with a huge plastic bag. I was so proud of them!

1961 I was in the Kinderoord MTR Smith orphanage in Ugie.
In 1962 I went to Queenstown for Holiday .
We went to Cathcart, to Indwe, Elliot, Umtata, Port St Johns, Maclear. East London.
I am telling you, what beautiful places.
I don't know if these places are still so beautiful 😢
Enjoy it wish I could be a fly to be in that car of yours.
JULLE IS BAIE GESEËNDE MENSE.

My heart was in my mouth is it open or closed then sat there with my mouth watering as you ate that biltong lol .St Albans was defence gothic with the stone mullion windows I am always moved by the war memorials and what a lovely little park .DRF church was defence of the same era with the same stone .it always surprises me that these RC churches in small towns .powder magazine was a find .loved the old double decker and the crazy scrap art right up my alley especially the table top made of spanners. Starting to get used to the cattle crossing love it .amazing to see the tunnel and the old station and the sign live tracks .the old farm equipment must have a big farming community plus tractors good to see the hospital is working. How lovely that you can just send the drone up to see the dam when you can't get a clear view. Just love the stone buildings they are stunning. That bus art was really something amazing. Those tunnels for the train, when the trains stll ran my husband and I would travel through them to East London and go through quite a few of them on the trip. Thank you for epicode. Much appreciated. ❤

Hi you two! Now this is a trip full of surprises!
The approach of the gravel road seems somewhat dry, but I think that can be expected when you're on your way to the Biltong Capital. Then out of the blue that beautiful dam pops up! Your drone view and music was captivating. The Bus Yard is really something unique. The stone memorial and stone churches and other stone buildings reflects the long and lively history of the place. It is wonderful to see such an old place so neat and clean even though the still alive biltong are roaming the streets. The dipping railway tunnel was unbelievable.
So I could go on and on until the WiFi drops me again.
Thank you for this wonderful trip. i am looking forward to the next one.

Keep safe!

What a clean town. A real credit to the residents. I cannot believe how many men lost their lives from such a small town during the two world wars. That Double Dekker bus was amazing. Have you guys seen the old red Double Dekker bus that used to be on the side of the road between George and Mossel Bay ? I think it was used in a movie. Tomorrow I am going to make 12 kg of Boerewors after watching you eating that biltong. That biltong looked so lekker. I notice that you never gave any to Sonia. How long was that tunnel? Would have been great to see a train coming out of it while you were there.

What a nice place to visit. So clean and the old buildings are stunning. If you think over the years they served their purpose and are still doing so. I love the name "Biltong Capital..." I should go and live there! I hope Sonja also got a small piece of your biltong! Wow the St Alban's church is beautiful. So sad that all the stations are abandoned - they played such a huge roll back in the days. If you look at the cattle on the road one knows where the biltong comes from! Overall a very nice drive I really enjoyed this one. Till the next one my seat is booked for sure!!

Lovely to see the blue crane. We once saw a secretary bird right next to the road in the Free State. He was amazing. Looks like the legs bend the wrong way, with the black nd white. Oh that old bridge!Screen shot for a painting! Stone buildings make sense out there. They saturate heat from the sun and keep it in, which is good for winter, as the place keeps warm, and in summer it keeps the worst of the heat out. Natural insulation. Ja nee! Lekker tandeslaan in daai biltong! Kroonstad is die biltong kapitaal! Love the church, and the incredibell bell! Wish I could hear it tong! Such a beautiful old stone building. Feast for the eye! So glad you found the station. Powder magazine...gebou om te hou, ne! Pity people think it is a rubbish bin!! Love the Bus yard art. There is very similar thing here down south called the Lost Gypsy. Totally fascinating. What an atmosphere! Hey! I remember pushing the push mower, such fun! I remember Cathcart as a little girl on our way back from holiday at Maselspoort in the Free State and on our way to King Williamstown and East London.
