When I was a kid, we plugged mics into 1/4" input jacks as a rule ... We don't do it now simply because we have better equipment , but I've done it nowadays at the odd impromptu jam, still works fine ...

Excellent tip! You can also use a cheap 12v amp for power and any kind of conventional speaker arrangement. That will actually sound better and take up less space in the trunk (boot), and run mobile as well. :)

It's also good to plug in a guitar pedal compressor before the amp just boosts it up to line level

Thanks for explaining so nicely! How can I use both microphone and guitar with an amplifier with just one input channel? Do I need a mixer and the microphone and guitar cables go into the mixer and output from the mixer goes into the input of the amplifier?
