In hell week of BUD/S training, students face an intense, non-stop barrage of physical and mental challenges. Lasting from Sunday to Friday, Hell Week pushes students to their limits, testing their resolve, teamwork, and survival skills. During this grueling period, students endure continuous training exercises, day and night, with minimal sleep and food, including obstacle courses, swimming, and running in harsh conditions. They also participate in simulated combat scenarios, survival training, and team-building exercises, all designed to break down individual egos and forge unbreakable bonds among teammates.
Instructors constantly harass and test students, forcing them to work together, rely on each other, and make quick decisions under pressure. The purpose of Hell Week is to identify students with the mental and physical toughness required for SEAL training, develop teamwork and leadership skills, simulate the stresses of combat and special operations, and prepare students for the challenges of advanced training. Only those who demonstrate exceptional resilience, determination, and teamwork make it through Hell Week, earning the right to continue their SEAL training. The dropout rate is staggering, with 70-80% of students typically dropping out before Hell Week, and 20-30% failing during the week itself, leaving fewer than 20% of the initial BUD/S class size to complete training.
