We introduce the concept of a population, parameter, sample, and statistics through a simple example of trying to identify what proportion of graduate students at Iowa State University have Gigabit routers. We propose a method to obtain a random sample of graduate students at ISU and introduce the idea of a sampling and non-sampling error.
