The Soul Stirrers

The Soul Stirrers are a vocal group that began in Texas, singing pure gospel music. In 1951, 18 year old Sam Cooke joined the group, writing songs and singing lead. He left to pursue a secular music career in 1957, and was replaced by Johnnie Taylor, who sounded exactly like Sam. Willie Rodgers, a close friend of Sam and his brother L.C. Cooke, has led The Soul Stirrers for more than 53 years.
