Full Frame Sensors vs Crop Sensor Cameras Explained by Karl Taylor!

The sensor in your camera is the CCD or CMOS chip that captures the light to record the image. It's the thing in your camera that replaced film! And just like film, they come in different sizes and formats. So today I'm going to take a look at sensor sizes.

For those of you who are a bit confused about what a 'full frame sensor' is in relation to a 'crop sensor' and just what all this means for your photography then check out this video where I'll explain it all in my usual no nonsense style!

Mr. Taylor, this was by far the best illustration of the differences between Crop and Full.

Wow, now I understand! I've had many people try and explain the difference between cropped and full censors but this cut the cake. Thank you so very much.

Bless you for explaining (10:40) that it is the greater camera to subject distance needed to achieve equivalent framing which increases the apparent depth of field when using a crop sensor camera. This is the first clear and concise explanation of this that I have seen or read anywhere ! I'll quote you, because everyone I know thinks the larger sensors are somehow imbued with magical depth of field (blurring, or 'bokeh') properties. Only three things can affect the depth of field: changing the true focal length of the lens, distance to the subject and / or the aperture, of course. I am pretty ignorant, but it seems others are, too, as regards basic physics of photography. Thank you!!

Nice to spend time with someone who really knows what he is taking about and how to explain it. Thanks.

Thank you so much for explaining that the 1.6 crop isn't a magnification, but just a crop. I've had arguments who think that focal length is magically increased.

This is a perfect explanation !
Lots of people misunderstand that 'extra magnification' on coped sensor cameras and in many foruns I read the complete oposite of what you explained and it just doesn't made any sense to me.. Thank you very much!

Couldn't help but notice you drew a pretty much perfect circle freehand.
