RISC OS 5.28. Raspberry Pi 400.

A very different OS. I enjoyed getting to try it. I would prefer to not have to configure an Ethernet connection.

My first raspberry Pi experience was with RISC OS and I will forever have a soft spot for it. Also I began learning to code in BBC basic

I bought an Acorn A3000 the day it was launched back in the 80's and at the time it was the fastest microcomputer in the world, and have just recently bought a Pi4 and installed Risc OS. Whilst the software is not as up to date as on other platforms, the ability to write your own in BBC Basic is one of it's best features. The 3 buttons on the mouse are used quite differently under Risc OS to other operating systems, just try using the scroll bars on a window with the right button instead of the left and you will see it does the opposite of left click. Drag and drop saving of files is also used more in Risc OS.

I saw a video the other day and didn’t realise there was a basic console at the bottom of the screen.

You’d probably like beos, I need to check out beos’ sql file system.

I still remember the days when RISC OS was _massively_ ahead of all the other OSs that were around at the time.  But Acorn Computers managed not to capitalise on their technological head-start by focussing almost exclusively on the UK market and only letting select dealerships sell their machines.  They completely missed the boat on several emerging technologies of the internet age, by insisting on keeping the floating-point processor as an optional extra, even while floating-point calculation became a _fundamental requirement_ in 3D gaming and Media encoding.

At least we still got the ARM chip line showing everybody that a CPU doesn't have to double as a central heating system for your house, in order to be powerful. 😉

Hi, thanks for this it was very interesting, the network worked straight out of the box for me, downloaded a few games and utilities and with your help overclocked it, cheers

Pressing the middle mouse button over application gives an option to view the help file.
Downloads from the !Store application can be copied across to where you want them.

Yeaa that's the adaptor I always used with RISC OS, it's gonna work (he says before finishing the video) and most exciting is pi400 support! I can't wait to install it 😀

Keep your finger on the middle mouse button...context menus are all over the place.
As you found, shift key opening is also useful.
Also to open a help file within a !xxxx folder, menu button on the folder and select help will open the help file if there is one inside.

Also ... saving edited files is different to other current OS - no need for another full file window to open, if you want a new file copy (or it was a new document) just type a name and then drag the file icon to where you want it stored.

You don't need a Pi 4 or 400 to run RISC OS. It runs amazingly well on an original 256 MB Raspberry Pi B. My first Pi is now dedicated to that task.

Just to add... RISC OS was well ahead of its time. I use to have the Acorn A3000 which I got given to me when I was at school in 1998 and were no longer needed. It ran RISC OS 2 it was an amazing computer. I like the Acorn A4000/A5000 PC versions. I am building an Acorn computer from an old 486 PC case and will have either a Raspberry Pi inside or some other ARM board. Raspberry Pi's are easily obtainable and cheap so that is my first option to use as an ARM system board. I don't believe nobody has actually built one yet or at least I've not seen any. RISC OS is like no other. You have BBC BASIC that tennis game looks like it was written in BBC BASIC it would be interesting to see if you could open it in BBC BASIC and list the programming code. For the web browser there might be a way to get Opera running on it or a more upto date browser.

I used RISC OS on my Acorn Archimedes and at the time I thought it was the bee's knees and the future of computing until Amiga DOS came along, at the same time as I was using Amiga DOS Windows 3.1 was running on the IBM clones of the time and we (me and my Usenet /BBS buddies) named it Windoze as compared to Amiga DOS it was very very slow

That Device is basically a miniature WiFi-Router so it should work with everything that uses TCP/IP Protocol over a LAN Port.

Ah, RISC known to all 80s and 90s kids in Britain as "The School Computer" lol. Way ahead of it's time though, and still good now. I've got it on a Pi 3 and in many ways I prefer it to win10 - the UI is much more polished, despite being 30+ years old.

Thank you for showing RISC OS and I have a question.
Can RISC OS be use for camera to take pictures and videos on the HQ raspberry pi camera?

The vonets router works okay, but the DHCP got broken on the RISC OS circa september. Also, you will need QupZilla to configure the Vonets router (it is heavy on modern HTML), but to install QupZilla you need working Internet. Catch-22?

maybe you can have a look at mx linux for raspberry pi (beta)
