I’m from Scotland (where JKR is from) and not joking, black mould is a whole issue with poorer housing and social housing, like slum landlords will rent out a flat (apartment) in terrible condition that has black mould and never do anything about it. They’ll literally just come over, rub some bleach over it, and call it a day.
My biological family (I’m an adopted child äbüśë survivor for context) had a house fire which led to the fire brigade coming out to put the fire out and investigate the cause, they actually thought it was attempted mürd3r because the entire fire alarm system had been disabled by the slumlord, and the entire flat got condemned due to many issues such as poor ventilation, no real escape (the front door from the basement, we had to escape through a small window we smashed), the water and sewage system was almost all original to the building (1800s) except a few “modern updates” which led to sewage backing up into the flat several times a week (like literal human waste💩), and one of the main issues the fire brigade condemned the property over was the black mould!
So like I mentioned, he would come over and bleach over the parts we complained about, but what we didn’t realise was the bedrooms had walls almost entirely covered by black mould, the landlord had actually wallpapered over the mould and then painted over the wallpaper, so we didn’t know how bad it actually was! Our home was made from sandstone and granite (2 most common stones used along NE Scottish coast) and when the walls were properly inspected (because we weren’t allowed to take any wallpaper down or paint the walls) the fire brigade found them dripping in damp and that’s why the black mould was able to spread so much. So any time the landlord came over using bleach, a completely useless method at getting rid of black mould? Yeah, he KNEW how bad it actually was and was just appeasing us.
Wanna know some fun side effects of living in a home with black mould? Asthma, infections, chronic sinus problems, persistent headaches and migraines, muscle aches, general breathing problems, fatigue and weakness, mental health problems, mood problems. Wanna know what issues I constantly suffered with when growing up? Almost all of the above! So black mould truly can alter someone’s mood and mental health, like I actually wouldn’t be surprised if JKR has been affected by black mould, and hey, maybe it’s sentient who knows.
And for anyone interested; the fire brigade literally condemned the entire property, like the whole building and not just the basement flat my bio family lives in. The landlord faced criminal charges and was convicted in court because they found every single property he owned had similar issues from black mould to zero fire safety measures (happened like… 18 years ago? I’m 33 now, adopted by childhood best friends family, so my bestie is my sister 😊)

I have just had a massive black mould, and other mould treatment of my unit. I certainly have a clearer head, and feel better without it! I am relieved that none of my moulds were transphobic! Whew!

I saw someone who previously made that exact mold joke write out an entire sincere apology paragraph that seemed like they were apologizing to JK for joking about her, until I realized they were apologizing to the mold for implicating it in JK’s transphobia.
