The Kiautschou Bay Leased Territory was acquired by Germany in 1898, marking their colonial expansion in East Asia. Germany developed the city of Tsingtao (Qingdao), bringing modern infrastructure and a naval base. During World War I, Japan seized the territory and retained control until 1922 when it was returned to China. The Tsingtao Brewery was founded in 1903 by the German settlers and combined German brewing with local ingredients (minus urine). After World War II, the brewery became a state-owned enterprise under Chinese control and evolved into one of China's largest and most renowned breweries. Tsingtao beer symbolizes Qingdao's colonial history and the blend of Eastern and Western influences.
