Why on earth hasn't a long2vc2 generic function been made available in standard SQL so that this nonsense rigmarole stopped once and for all!!!!
It's only been more than 10 years, must be hard...
What a sad joke this whole thing has been.
Still, don't get me wrong: thanks a lot for finally making this clear and easy to reference!
And BTW: "long2vc2" is my function name and NO, I don't authorize Oracle to use that for their future generic function! :)))

Long type is a pain. Explanation that people will get upset if you change it sounds pathetic. It would be enough to create another column next to it.
That is why Oracle is loosing with for example PostgreSQL.
Oracle stop being dinosaurs, move on to the future!
