So, the first week of December, we kicked off Month 2 of our Christmas spirit (we started early in November) in the place where Advent was invented.
Our 8-day itinerary:
- Prague, Czech Republic 🇨🇿
- Munich, Germany 🇩🇪
- Salzburg, Austria 🇦🇹
- Hallstatt, Austria 🇦🇹
- Vienna, Austria 🇦🇹
The entire trip was as romantic and captivating as we hoped.
The trains, the churches, the graveyards, the mountains.
The foods, the lights, the hidden discoveries.
⭐️The final tally: we visited 14 Christmas markets. ⭐️
Favorite foods:
- Trdelník, as it’s called in Prague. (Found it in Austria too where it has a different name.)
- Roasted nuts
- Sausages
- Lindt Bretzel bar
Favorite Christmas markets:
- Vienna’s Christkindlmarkt at Rathaus. It’s as large as a county fair and even with the insane crowds, the over-the-top lights, decorations, and number of booths made it a sensory overload. Bonus: ice skating on the winding track.
- Prague’s Old Town Square. Total “pinch-me” moment. Felt like we were in a movie set, in this well-preserved medieval setting.
Favorite city:
- Prague. So much untouched medieval charm. This city ranks up there with Paris, Carcassonne, and Lauterbrunnen on my list of fav Europe cities. I had no idea I would love it so much.
Most unusual experience:
- Krampus day in Salzburg on December 5. This special event was unlike anything we’ve seen before. Google “Krampus Austria” and then watch the video at around 9:40.
Most “Dreamy” destination:
- Hallstatt. There’s a legit reason it is so heavily featured on Instagram and in calendars like “World’s Most Beautiful Places”. Watch video at 7:50.
Glad we packed:
- Thermals. We had on so many layers underneath our thick jackets, we were walking Stay-Puff Marshmallows. Since we were outside the entire trip, our thermal base became very important.
Wish we had more time in:
- Munich. A silly travel mistake + train delays caused us to lose almost our entire time in Munich. The 90 minutes we spent there gave us enough of a taste to know we want to go back.
