I remember when i was in school, a teacher taught us about govt budgeting by having everyone in the class come up with their own budgets for the country with percentages. What percentage would you give education, health, military etc. Every student then had their proposed budgets posted in front of the class so we could all compare what we came up with. I think the most any student suggested we give the military was 15% and then we were shown the real budget and we all realized how little funding was actually being given to what we actually wanted.

As a Medicare recipient I will say that it is neither cheap or free. $175.00 comes out of my social security check every month as a premium. I also have a $245.00 deductible on my plan B for a year. I also have a $1600.00 deductible for plan A if I were hospitalized. This deductible is renewed every two months you are not hospitalized. So, I am obligated to go to a private insurer to help with the cost of deductibles. I get no help for the $175.00 per month premium I pay directly to the government for Medicare when I have payed into the system my whole life. Now I must continue to work in order to pay for my Medicare while putting even more into the Social security system as well as Medicare. About fifty percent of Social security and Medicare recipients must work in order to live. Yes, it's very complicated and unreasonably stupid. Most people who talk about Medicare and Social security don't know how these programs work, or don't work for many of us.
