Just as with showing through coordinates that U(1) is the set of complex numbers on the unit circle, could a comparison be made between

U(3) and SU(3)
U(2) and SU(2)
U(1) and SU(1)

Such a visual comparison, even in the limited representation of additional dimensions of coordinates, would go a long way in clarifying the subject.
