Trump administration policies were uniquely damaging to health. Yet in many respects, they represented a continuation and intensification of neoliberal policies dating to the 1980s, which have not been fully reversed under President Biden.

Drs. Woolhandler and Himmelstein, co-founders of Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP), are not only well known for their health scholarship, but also for bridging research to policy.

They review the long-standing failings in health and social policies that have left the US trailing other developed nations in life expectancy and other measures of population health. They particularly focus on the profoundly dysfunctional health care financing system in the US that reinforces racial and class inequities.
