In this video we look at the problem that was causing us to have "restricted performance" on our Land Rover Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 Diesel. We use the GAP IID tool to read the errors.

Simon, you guys are brilliant and have saved me a fortune! I’ve got a 2010 L320 RR Sport (106K miles) with the same engine as your D4. Just like you, it started going into Limp-Home on cold mornings and/or going up a hill. Then it started doing it on the motorway too. My iCarsoft 930 tool suggested a Mass Air Flow sensor and like you, B was filthy and A was spotless. I cleaned B as best as I could, but it wasn’t, as clean as A.
The car still threw itself into Limp-Home on Hills, cold mornings or on Motorways. My iCarsoft was suggesting the dreaded 100060 fault which usually means a £2, 000 fix of replacing both plastic inlet manifolds.
However, I wasn’t convinced because I could delete the error on the move and the car would happily drive a while before the fault occurred again.
Inspired by your video and a couple of others using a smoke box, I decided to see if I could find a crack in the manifolds. I don’t have a smoke box. I used to smoke, but now use a Vape. I undid the pipe from the intercooler, then found a very small funnel, (the sort you fill a lawn mower sump with oil) and wrapped some masking tape round it until it was the same diameter as the inside of the rubber pipe from the Intercooler to the Right-angle bend plastic peice that goes into the ‘Y’ junction, into each plastic inlet manifold.
I then blew Vape smoke into the funnel and instantly found that the Right-angle plastic piece was not properly attached to the ‘Y’ junction Throttle body.
I unscrewed an 8mm headed bolt behind the fan and the clip that joins the 2 plastic pieces, reattached them and the problem is solved……….Absolutely FOC (apart from my Vape Liquid!!).

IIRC, I did see a similar problem highlighted by Christian Muth on one of his and Vera’s “Its LR Time” videos and before anybody involves themselves in any expensive garage repair, it is worth investigating a problem yourself first.
Thanks again!

Another great video that helped me understand how to fix my Range Rover Sport. Keep up the good work!

I’ve just purchased a 10 year old Disco 4 3.0 V6 and had this exact same issue. I don’t have the IID tool but after watching the video, I’ve cleaned both and will see what happens. Great videos, easy to follow and without videos like this, I don’t think I would have attempted it. MAFS cleaner was only $28.

This video saved me over a $1000 dollars (AUD)
I had a local mechanic do the scan and got a P00100 and a P00AA fault. Did some research, found this vid.
Removed and cleaned both the MAF's and switched them over got the same engine warning.
Went to British Motor Imports in Vineyard near Sydney, they charged me $150 for a new unit, plugged it in problem solved. Thank you!!
Local Euro motor works quoted $1200 to switch out a $150 part.

Thank you so very much for your counsel.
The challenge has been that the restricted performance indication has been coming up and clearing when the vehicle is left off for a while. The fuel consumption has also been on the higher side. When I check the MAF on two occasions I have noticed oil in the air duct and even on the air cleaner.
The oil consumption from the engine has not been very bad even though I have had to top up on two occasions.
I was therefore wondering whether the bad MAF could lead to poor fuel consumption which is possible as stated in the write ups but the link to the oil in the air duct is what has been puzzling. The smoke discharge from the exhaust has been normal. At some point I was wondering whether the Turbo could be defective but the power and performance when the restricted Performance alarm is not on is very normal and excellent performance in terms of the power from the engine.
I thank you for any added advice on this challenge.
Best regards.

Another great video Simon and Ian. Love the relaxed style. Got the same fault which only started after I cleaned it with contact cleanner after reading a lot of blah blah on disco 3. B was dirty and a was clean. Going to try your swop idea and then see what happens. Those GAP IID tools should come free with every new LR and it be the law to leave them for the next owner. Oh yes.

The inlet manifold is plastic.

When it cracks you get restricted performance when accelerating.

But often the fault codes lead you to think it could be MAF related.

As many of LR users, i'm going crazy due to failure bothering me for more than 4 months now. So to keep it short i started with nice restricted performance, including some oil inside my air filter and the following codes: P006A-00 (historic) / P00BD-07 (intermittent) / P1247-00 (historic) / P0235-94 (intermittent).
Based on such error list my standard garage advice me for the reconditioning of both turbo's, including actuators, seal kit for both, EGR's valve original new, and many exhaust seals related to these 2.
Nevertheless after the change i still see some oil in my freshly new installed air filter, and i still get the P1247 -00 boost pressure low error. But from time to time and in some very awkward conditions, which i will try to describe:

- ALWAYS after i drive some hours / engine is hot / and after one immediate restart
- feeling of low power @ low revs
- starting small jerk just before gear shift - maybe in some incline start
- after clear feeling of car jerk 3-4 times, where some power and loss of power is strongly felt the restricted performance is there
- AFTER 10 mins shut of the car starts without any fault

I can also describe that by hard pull or higher speeds / revs such failure is not happening.

Great video. I cleaned both. On IID Tool is shown air mass A with 0, 2g/s and on stage B 200g/s is that ok? Or it should display both sides same amount? Thx Magdy

I just had a “restricted performance” code pop up on my 2012 Land Rover Range Rover HSE. It’s only at about 100, 000 miles. My warranty is out so I hope I’m not up shit creek. I haven’t noticed any issues leading up to this.

My 2011 RR Sport 3.0 TDV6 goes into limp mode after 120 km/h when I am flooring it hard. I had hoped its those guys that failed but alas not. Some valve on the smaller turbo is gone - dont know exactly how its called but you can reach it from underneath the car.... Can you please let me know how is it called or whats the part number? The gentlemen from the shop did not help with that..

What does it mean when there are traces of oil in the ducts leading from the MAF sensors. Could this have anything to do with the Restricted Performance on the Discovery 4 Land Rover?

The operations you do with the IID tool are they limited to just that piece of equipment or can you do the same stuff on other diagnostic units?
