Frank Williams said in an interview about that incident- when they got the car back to the garage it fired right up with no issue. Called it an electrical glitch.

Nelson Piquet said later in an interview that he laughed when he passed Nigel Mansell and won that race

If I’m in second place and won like that, I would be embarrassed. He bodied us all race then just barely sold at the end. But hey a wins a win 😂😂😂

Really gave me “Checkered flag, here I come- *tire pops*” vibes except the engine dies instead

One of my main gripes with current F1 cars is that they have become way too reliable, which makes peiods of dominance look way worse than ever before. Looking back at the 90s, it wasn't uncommon for more than half of the cars not making it till the end, and a race weekend wasn't complete without at least one engine going up in a glorious cloud of smoke. And even when someone was leading comfortably (like Mansell here), nothing was ever certain. Back then I was a Jean Alesi fan, and boy did he have his share of bad luck....

Nowadays most retirements are the result of accidents, not technical issues. Which just takes away part of the tension.
