Hands-On: Chronos Adventure-RPG for Oculus Rift

One of our favorite Gear VR games was Herobound, which played like Zelda in virtual reality. Its developers' next game is Chronos, an adventure-RPG for Oculus Rift. We play a bit of Chronos, share our impressions, and discuss why it's a game we could play for a long time in a VR headset.

For those moaning about the ammount of VR, Look at every tech outlet where once there was apple it's now VR. It's the most exciting/high traffic consumer grade tech at the moment. This channel has been following it from the very bitty start so of course now it's ramping up they need to be on it.

At 7:55, if you listen carefully, you can hear Kavinsky's Nightcall playing in the background. Great video by the way!

Reminds me of an old game Ecstatica. Great work.

I understand from a business point of view why they wanted to make this for VR. Small selection of launch titles means high visibility and likely better sales than simply putting it out on Steam. However, there doesn't appear to be anything about Chronos that needed to be VR. All camera movement would work just as well on the right analogue stick.

I wonder how far away we are from neurologically being able to control virtual movement and removing the use of a controller or external items to control the inside of the game... :)

the camera system is pretty clever here. I can also see this working for platformers where the camera continues to follow the central character while giving the player free viewing range. a bit like you're in a drone that pivots the character.

has this been done yet with vr?

I'm not sure how I'll like third person games in VR until I play them. I love the environments in this game, very atmospheric. Takes me back to some of the better moments in the Kingsfield series or Ico. I yearn for exploring this kind of environment in first person but movement in VR is still kind of a question mark. I suppose I might prefer this to a teleport mechanic.

So we get that you are enthusiastic about VR. Great stuff. Now can we move on?

Really nice idea! I've been rather concerned about the limited set of games that could work with VR.

Anyone else think of Resident Evil when seeing how the camera works? I would love to play the Remake of RE like this.

I wasn't too hyped for this but after watching this I'm pretty sure this will be a must buy. Just hope it's coming to PSVR.

I think this is the first VR demo ive seen where it actually looks like a game id want to put my money down for, The rest have always looked like tech demos thats would be fun for 5 mins just to play the Hook of the mechanics then never play again. Im not hugely interested in VR because it jus seems to cumbersome right now but that type of game looks like it has potential to be great, and save the destruction of my living room.
