Have you ever wondered why two-handed bowlers need the second hand to bowl? If you don’t know the answer, it’s a big problem. And if you know the answer, like, because it helps hold the ball during the swing, you would be surprised that it’s much more crucial than that. In this video, I will unveil a secret of the second hand in the two-handed bowling style which can help you have a much stronger and more accurate release. Let’s dive in.

00:38 Release Timing in 2 handed bowling
02:13 What if the non-bowling hand leaves the ball too early?
03:23 How to prevent the non bowling hand leaving the ball too early?

Key highlights
💡 00:00 Using the non-bowling hand in two-handed bowling helps to time the release and lessen the weight of the ball during the swing.

🎳 01:08 Release timing is crucial for two-handers, just like for one-handers, even though the thumb is not used in two-handed bowling.

🎳 01:47 Keep your non-bowling hand under the ball at release to avoid rotating the ball too early and dropping it off to the side.

🎳 02:25 Use your non-bowling hand to help with ball rotation and maintain leverage for an optimal release, but be mindful not to let go too soon.

🎳 02:55 Use both hands to create rotation and keep the ball on the target line when releasing.

💡 03:17 Apply pressure with your non-bowling hand to prevent the ball from falling off the target line during release.

pro tip: hold onto the ball with your non bowling hand up until u reach your shoe laces and then let go. This will help keep your hand more behind the ball and have a more consistent release. if u look at slow motion videos of pro two handers, u see the moment they release their non bowling hand is around that area

The movement of the second hand has been my main focus lately. Looking at my movements I have been able to see that this is the main cause of inconsistency on a behind the ball release vs getting around the side. Watching video of myself i have noticed how my second hand release will cause me to get around the ball if my swing is rushed or released too early, and also causing unwanted momentum resulting in bad shoulder direction or stepping off my shot. Fluid motion in my opinion is what really sets a visual/ performance difference when observing an advanced bowler to an amateur. A motion that I feel will take me years(possibly) to truly perfect (if ever).

What has been helping me recently is practicing a swing with no ball, but visualize the ball and keeping my hands at the same distance from each other for the whole swing (as if I had a ball in my hands). In my 2 handed approach I see a noticeably more consistent release once applied with a real ball. In a nice fluid motion; as my second hand starts to swing up\left and leave contact with the ball, the ball is rolling off my main hand and both hands reach their final position at the same time. Only after the ball has left my control do my hands create more distance from themselves. If one hand stops before the other at the end of my swing I know something went wrong, and this gives me information during my throws to know what adjustments need to be made. Ive seen you do this well in your releases, and its something I see when watching pros.

written in hopes to add to your video and possibly help any who may find it useful.

Nice to see a new video, and hope to see more. I watch many bowling channels and find your videos as some of the most useful and helpful bowling formats that focus on key fundamental elements of 2handed. And doing so while not adding too much extra information in each video that would cause a viewer to try and work on too many things at once, which is valuable.

Thanks

Focusing more on the non-bowling hand seems to have helped me to mentally trust my grip on the ball, allowing me to swing back farther without fear of dropping the ball 👍

I feel lately I have hit a wall in terms of ball speed. I went to a Belmo event and its amazing to see him casually throwing 18-20mph with almost no walk up, and very little physical exertion. I struggle to throw more than 15-16mph off my hand and it takes a lot of effort. If you have time, I would love a video on the general overview of ball speed as a 2 hander, since I know many others struggle with the same thing

Fantastic video. Please keep up the great work in explaining the biomechanics behind bowling. As far as I can tell you are the only person currently doing that. There is so much mythology in bowling and made up reasons for doing things, so it is cool to hear the opposite of that in your videos.

i'm confused at 4:14 you say the left hand is removed/moved to the side by the release/finger rotation of right hand, how does that work? i have this exact issue of removing hand early, which causes me to miss left of target often, may you help me better understand? thank you

do you think having the non bowling hand closer to the bowling hand will also help this? i used to face the same problem when my non bowling hand was further away from my bowling hand but my accuracy has gone up a lot when i started putting my non bowling hand much closer to my bowling hand, presumably fixing the same issue that you mentioned in the video
