CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Johnny (Christopher Walken) confronts Roger Stuart (Anthony Zerbe) about the fate of his son Chris (Simon Craig).

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Christopher Walken plays a schoolteacher, Johnny Smith, who awakens from a five-year coma. He discovers that he has acquired the ability to foretell a person's future simply by touching his or her hand. After seeing several examples, Smith's doctor (Herbert Lom) becomes convinced that Smith can not only predict the future, but also has the power to change it. This ability is given its severest test when Smith shakes the hand of ruthless political candidate Greg Stillson (Martin Sheen) -- and suddenly has a flash-forward to a nuclear holocaust. The Dead Zone is not only one of the best-ever Stephen King adaptations, but also one of the most consistently successful (and least gory) efforts of director David Cronenberg.

Apparently King had suggested Bill Murray to play Johnny. Thank goodness Walken was chosen. His performance was remarkably nuanced. Expressing confusion, rage, tenderness, sadness and horror, all within a single character.

Anger, frustration, fear, compassion: magnificent performance by Christopher Walken.

In this scene Johnny finally accepts his "gift" and the responsibilities it gives him. You can kind of tell by the "warlock" jacket he is wearing with the high collar.

This is such an absolute favorite. And then the scene after with the father drinking whisky in silence, the news of the drowning in the background. A silent caller... The Boy is ok "Johnny?"

This is why Walken is so incredible. I've come back to this 100 times, probably more. Just riveting. Only outdone by the opening scene awakening from the coma: "It's not too late... Gawd, could any other actor have achieved this?? I don't think so.

Perfect casting for a Tragic, and Tormented "Hero" and a great adaptation of Stephen King's Book. Yes the book filled in so many details but at the end of the day a Movie can only be 100 or so minutes.

Because of this movie, I have asked myself (even in nightmares, lol) "Would I be willing to be a Hero, if it meant everyone else in the world - thought I was a nut or a bad guy"..

It does. However, the son stayed home while the father went to the practice with the other boys. I think 3 of them drowned. John sees the headline in the newspaper and calls the house. The father is just sitting there. The son picks up the phone. John doesn't say anything but after a few moments the son asks, "Johnny, is that you?" What a scene!!

Even more impressive, Walken has to keep that limp through-out the movie, on top of acting, and have it look natural. Multi-talented actor!!
