Is It Better Or Worse? John Deere 2025r: New Style vs Old Style

Compare the new style John Deere 2025r tractor with the old (classic) style John Deere 2025r tractor. Both are part of the 2 Series family of compact tractors offered by John Deere. Physical dimensions of each tractor are nearly identical, however you'll find many improvements in the refined version of the 2018 John Deere 2025r.

Some of the largest differences in the operator's station include an upgraded seat and suspension, redesigned control locations and handles creating a much more comfortable and ergonomic experience. New standard features including fender mounted work lights, cruise control, relocated and more convenient fender mounted fuel fill, seat back storage space, integrated step, and more!

Here are a few things that were missed regarding capability between the 2013-2016 2025R (GEN 1) and the 2017-Present 2025R (GEN 2), it would appear that JD is moving the 2025R closer to the 1 series:

ENGINE:
GEN 1 = Yanmar 3TNV76 = 24.2 hp, PTO 18 hp
GEN 2 = Yanmar 3TNV80F = 23.9 hp
PTO 18 hp

LOADER:

Lift Height:

Gen1 : H130 – 78.9" at pivot
Gen2 : 120R - 72" at pivot

Lift Capacity:
GEN 1: H130: 1023 lbs
GEN 2: 120R: 754 lbs

Breakout Force (at pin):
GEN 1: H130: 2508 lbs
GEN 2: 120R: 1823 lbs

BRAKES:
GEN 1: Dual Rear Brakes
GEN 2: Single Rear Brake

PTO HORSEPOWER 3 PT HITCH:
GEN 1: has larger pins connecting the draft arms to the tractor frame
GEN 2: has pins which are smaller than Cat1 Implement pins, connecting the draft arms to the tractor frame

GEN 1: has adjustable draft arm lift. 3 different holes on draft arms and 3 different holes on lift links to adjust lift height and lift capacity
GEN 2: has fixed relationship between lift links and draft arms

GEN 1: stabilizers pull the draft arms together
GEN 2: stabilizers pull the draft arms apart

GEN 1: has greater lift height

GEN 1: Rear Lift (at ends): 1433 lbs
GEN 2: Rear Lift (at ends): 1234 lbs

GEN 1: Rear Lift at 24” = 1150 lbs
GEN 2: Rear Lift at 24” = 882 lbs

TURNING RADIUS:
GEN 1 = 7.7 ft, 6.7 ft w/ Brakes has tighter turning radius than GEN 2 without brakes.

FRONT AXLE LOAD:
GEN 1: = 1940 lbs
GEN 2: = 1349 lbs

FRAME:
GEN 1: has a heavier frame and the GEN 2.

I own the old-style 2025R and I LOVE that machine! It has never let me down and has surprised me how powerful it is. I am using the front loader H130 and the 270A backhoe moving rocks and building stone walls and it has hauled rocks out of the ground that I never thought it would. It is a steady, reliable machine that is able to handle most any job.
I do like the new operator station, however, bit more streamlined. If I would suggest anything to change, give a bit more room between the seat and the 270A controls so you don't knock your nads when you lift the dipper!

I'm still shopping, still doing my research and definitely find your series of videos very helpful for making my decision. It would be great to have a more in depth review of each compact tractor model. Keep up the great work. I've subscribed

The two things I like about the new one is the location of the diesel fill and the 12v outlet. The outlet would have helped the other day when I needed to fill a tire way out in the field not near and power outlet

Speaking from 1025r experience, there's two things not good on that new 2025r:
1) The hood looks identical to a 1025r and is apparently plastic (forget 'composite', it's PLASTIC), and the hood latch will break off. Probably within the first 100 hours.
2) While the new/old fuel filler thing is a lot easier than climbing up top with a 5 gal. fuel can, the filling spout rusts. This is a very well known and well covered problem on all the owner's forums. Replacing the thing isn't hard, but at JD prices, not fun either.

You put out great content time and time again. I’m also very impressed with how you operate your business - ethically and with great integrity.

I have experience with both machines and the older version is MUCH better. The 120R loader is nothing compared to the H130 when it comes to durability. Yes the Autoconnect deck is nice but does not mow nearly as good as the 54D and 62D on the older version.

@goodworkstractor Do you know when JD plans to redesign the current 2025r? They seem to do this in 3-4 year cycles

I was about to pull the trigger till I noticed the loader “degrade”. I currently have two kubota BX sub compacts and lift has been a limitation all year using them commercially. I liked the H130 but noticed some of the losers were the newer 120 series which I didn’t understand at first. Why make a larger tractor with the same loader as the sub compact? Maybe too many broken or warranty front ends. Who knows but I’m out for sure.

What's the difference between them both to 2011 2520 with 200cx loader 62d mower

What is the rear track width of the 2 units? The older unit seems to have wider tires and a wider track width than the new one?

can you do a video showing the difference between the 2025r and the other 2 series tractors?

One thing I noticed as you were doing the walk around. The older one has right and left brakes. Glad to see you back. You must have been busy. BTW, I like the new one better.

2025r with loader and mid mower - I got my first john deere about 2 weeks ago, have nothing but trouble, it only has 1 hour on it. When I first bought it, when I went in reverse, it would shut down the mower, now when I go in reverse, it turns off both deck and the engine. just one of the issues

I drive the old 2025 and I hate it. It's like a rock on wheels.
The slightest bump or crack or even twig will make the tractor shake and the bucket, which is very loud.
I do however, like how smooth the loader works compared to our 2 sizes up Kubota. It is so clunky and not as user friendly. Keep in mind I am not an seasoned operator.
