My 2017 3500 cummins gets 20 miles a gallon, not pulling, completely stock.

I bought a 2014 brand new. In 2 1/2 years I put 229, 000 miles on it. I delivered brand new travel trailers to dealers. I'd pull park models that were 11, 000 pounds. 40 foot toy haulers. All toy haulers are heavy. I did pull a 42 foot luxury 5th wheel. That weighed 17, 000 pounds empty. No issues

I've owned them all....and honestly the Ram trucks have given me the fewest headaches of them all. Owned 3 of them now and they've all been awesome trucks.

In 2010 we bought a Black 2002 3/4 ton, 4 X 4 extended cab Dodge Diesel to pull our 30 foot, 13, 000 pound two Harley toy hauler for $3, 000! It had 185, 000 miles on it. We and our married couple friends of 40 years took our Harleys to the Sturgis Bike Rally and that truck pulled that load like it wasn't even there. On the way home going over Interstate 70 west out of Denver we blew a water pump and got a tow to Glenwood springs at 3AM in the morning to a local AutoZone parking lot. After a few hours of sleep we woke up and went into the AutoZone at 8AM, bought a water pump for the Cummins, installed it in 15 minutes "with a new belt" and we were back on the road in a half an hour! That's the simple engineering of the Cummins In-Line 6 Cylinder Engine!

I have a 2000 and a 98.5 cummins and both are still going strong. My 2000 has 355 gears and gets 21 miles to a gallon on economy setting. The 98.5 has 410 gearing and gets 18. Did have to beef up trannys to handle 1500 hp and large fluid capacity billet fined pan to be bullet proof and installed cooler with fan motor for even more protection. Allison trannys are a great upgrade too.Lots of power even on economy setting and a blast to drive. You can easily change injectors compared to other diesel motors and they are tougher than most injectors. The engine itself is user friendly. Upgrade lift pump to fast pump and get 18 psi at idle all day and 16 on the peddle. Always run lube in your fuel for vp44 injector pump and it will last. Also a small inline filter before lift pump helps it last longer too. Always have a warning light or a fuel pressure gage to keep an eye on the lift pump so you do not damage injector pump because they are not cheap.

When dodge was in the first talks with Cummins to put their engine in a pickup, they were also making plans to include Allison transmissions in the project. They decided it would make the truck too expensive for the market though, and went forward to be known for having a weak automatic transmissions in their diesel pickups.
The 6 speed standard is solid AF though

Cummins makes a very good diesel engine. When maintenance is done as required few have any problems

I had a SRW 3500 Cummins that I bought to pull my step-dad's 5th wheel RV. I traded it because we weren't using the RV and I needed something better on fuel mileage (and loan payments) for my commute to work. I miss that truck a great deal!

Doesn't matter what the subject of the video is, Scotty always finds a way of taking a shot at GM. 😏

One thing you have to watch out for on the 6.7 turbo diesel is the preheater strip the bolt that holds it tight warps and falls of then it goes down the #6 piston and kills the engine . It is known as the engine killer. I have the first series 6.7 2007.5 no trouble yet but I know where to check. I am going to order the deletion kit .

I get over 20 miles to the gallon on the freeway and around 15-17 city in my 2018 Cummins. It’s a 3500 crew cab long bed 4x4 and that’s on my stock one. My pumped up built one gets better once all the emissions were gone. Diesels get way better mileage than a equivalent gas engine and a lot more power. I can’t wait to get my 2023 Cummins dually lol

My brother in law became a transmission specialist for a road tractor repair business, I was around him one time when the subject of RAM trucks came up. That was the only criticism about the truck, the engine was to powerful for the transmission.

Hey Scotty. I would recommend getting the heavy duty ones after 2013 because they switched from the 6 speed Chrysler auto transmission to a 6 speed Aisin auto transmission. And as you know Aisin is owned by Toyota so its basically a Toyota transmission. There was also the 6 speed manual which is pretty cool.

I have 3 RAM Cummins diesels in my business…. They don’t break… and have towed 36, 000/lbs by mistake… they don’t break, I get 30/mpg on the highway… many of my subcontractors have Ford and Chevy diesels.. they ALWAYS Break! Constantly getting towed away from the job sites..

We have a 2015 ram 3500 to pull our boom lift at work, We don't use it much, more of a backup truck to use, , , anyway on the highway with tools loaded it get's 19.2 mpg. Same engine. Just turnered 100.000 miles. Around town maintenance wise, gets 15 mpg. Oh that lift weighs 10500 lbs, not cointing the gooseneck trailer. Handles well, but has a rough ride, which is expected!

Company I retired from had a pond for fire control powered by a Cummins diesel. It's been working for over 53 years and never rebuilt. Tough as granite.
