Fun fact is, manufacturers don't want you to have product that would last forever. The laptop failing is intentional so that you get to buy another one

Had an old Alienware 17 R1, things hinges were bulletproof. They screwed directly into the metal midframe of the laptop. Shame it finally gave out last year, thing was a beast.

Hinges can easily be made stronger but they always go the cheap way not the hinge itself but the plastic mountain points

This is so so true!! Been working in an after-sales point of a big electronics franchise and I get these 3-4 times every week. They all cover it under warranty tho, but when your warranty is expired they charge €200-350 for this to be 'fixed'. LOL

My parents bought be a 1000 dollar HP laptop, and I am extremely disappointed in the quality. It feels cheep, the screen flickers when it’s moved just slightly, and the screen developed these long lightish spots on the screen. What a waste of money.

Planned obsolescence at it finest, while saving costs by not designing better hinges for bigger laptops. I immediately thought of a u-shaped (square U) bracket that goes besides and underneath the keyboard when the laptop is closed (between keyboard and screen), so all of the screen bezel is supported when opening. I hope I'm being clear enough in this description. Just in case you want a 17 inch laptop for more than a year.

If your hinge is stiff just take apart you laptop until you reach the hinges the you can use a 5mm wrench to adjust the tension!
I would advise you do this as soon as you get a laptop!
Even brand New!

Miss the ThinkPad series with solid stainless steel hinges with magnesium alloy casing.

I don't think "really nice" and "HP" has ever been used in the same sentence until now

That happens to everyone’s school chromebooks at my school

A big part of the problem with the hinges on these laptops is how they mount. Good laptops mount the hinge to a long metal bracket to spread out the load across the screen and bottom chassis. Laptop hinges take a lot of force to open and close we never notice this due to the screen acting as a lever. Hinge failure is intentional built in obsolescence.

This has been an issue for HP laptops for over ten years. I’ve had two that failed in this same way.

Remember kids, if your laptop has crappy hinges, open with 2 hands, one on each corner. This will put way less strain on the hinges.

this is one of the reasons i switched to mac for laptops, the hinge on these things is on another level

HP had issues with the hinges themselves in 2006 with the HP Pavilion DV2000, DV6000, and DV9000 series machines, my DV2402ca is useless because the hinge snapped

For some reason they do break right after the warranty expires😜

That's... HP for ya! If they aren't cutting corners where it matters (like cooling, airflow, or power), they're cutting corners elsewhere (specs, hardware, structural integrity). Nice to know they haven't changed much since 2008 lol.

had a Sony VAIO but they cancelled them. Never had that laptop break, only had it become really slow due to parts aging.
