Reaction To America's Small Town in Canada

This is my reaction to America's Small Town in Canada

In this video I react to Canadian and American geography by looking at an interesting quirk in their geography where an American town is inside Canada.

There's another example out in BC. Point Roberts is physically attached to BC but part of Washington state.

About 25K off the south coast of Newfoundland are 2 islands that are self governing collectivity of France (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon). Being on the island feels like you are in Europe. The stores close daily between 12 and 2 pm and most close on Sun. Restaurants serve dinner later than most other restaurants and their currency is Euro. As expected the official language is French. There is a car ferry that transports residents/tourists between NFLD and the Islands. Some residents commute to NFLD for work. It's' quite interesting!

I remember during covid, that this town was stranded. They weren’t able to even buy groceries

Point Roberts, Washington. Only access to Washington is through Canada or by boat. While Canada got all of Vancouver Island, this tiny peninsula was overlooked so the 49th went right through. At least the roads are paved.

“Beebe Plain is a town divided. The Canada/U.S. border runs down the middle of Canusa Street, putting one side of the village in Quebec, and the other in Vermont

I remember learning about this in geography in middle school And as a Canadian, I always thought it was funny that this little tiny piece of America is in here lol. Also learned about a little town below Vancouver that is on the Canadian side but it's America. Same thing. High school kids have to cross the border to go to school. Weird how they don't fix these a long time ago

There's also an island in the high Arctic which was the site of the friendly and funny Whisky War between Canada and Denmark. The border between Canada and Denmark (Greenland) runs through Hans Island. I think the liquor control boards of both countries were sad to see that war end.

Another American village that has only road access from Canada is Hyder Alaska. It's so small they don't even have American border customs, but there is Canadian customs on the way back out.

There are islands in the Atlantic coast that neither US or Canadian ownership, some are property of FRANCE but are surrounded by Canada. On the west coast, Point Roberts, Washington state property is isolated from the rest of the USA.

There was a time, pre 911, all you needed to cross the border was a drivers licence or a Canadian health insurance card in case they asked.

Have you heard of Canusa Street? It's literally right on the border between Quebec and Vermont.

When driving west from Thunderbay, if you take the wrong highway, you end up at the international border, and on your way to this place! (It happened to me on my very first cross Canada drive back in 1976!, - it was dark and I was 18 - lol)

Lake of the Woods is a large area that has a lot of tourism activity. I visited Jim's Corner sometime between 2005-2008. There was no videophone then, but I think everyone had to sign a ledger at the post office/store if you were from the Canada side of the Lake.

The nearest reverse equivalent is Campobello Island New Brunswick. It is so close to Maine that they have a bridge between them but you have to take a ferry to get to New Brunswick.

Another town like North West Angle is Port Roberts, Washington which borders British Columbia. The Port Roberts residents had a heck of a time during the Covid lockdown. I know there are Youtube videos about it.

Love your channel. Just watched your Sundown reaction. If you haven’t reacted to Jeff Healey I would love to see one. My ancestors were from Skye

Stanstead QC and Derby Line VT the border goes through the town, there is a street where the middle of the road is the border and the Haskell Library has the entrance in the United States, books in Canada. before 911 it was easy to go into the USA all you needed was ID like a drivers license. There are many places along the border with a hut and a phone.

the reason why we don't settle the border there is because how hard it is to travel in that area on the Canada side. look at it on google earth. it's a no mans land. too many lakes to build any substantial roads or cities in the lake of the woods area. so no reason to stress over it. it's basically just a cottage paradise. especially on the Canada side. 90% of the little islands have a cottage on them lol. it's actually wild to zoom in on google earth and see just how many there are dotted in the lakes.

Same with Campabello Island in New Brunswick/maine border, to get there you have to do the same border type crossing from new brunswick. Weird little quirks all over the place. I saw someone mentioned point Robert's as well.

The real trouble is on the Canadian side. That area is between Thunder Bay and Winnipeg. There's nothing around there but trees, more trees. Kenora, and more trees. Oh and bears outnumber people. Not enough for any side to get much fuss over.
