So HERZOG's National Party in the 1930's wanted UNITY between English & Afrikaner South Africans, he however wanted EQUAL STATUS for the Afrikaans language, with English throughout South Africa in the civil service as it was still predominantly English Colonial, which he succeeded in. It must be remembered that the National Party of the 1970 & 80's had large English speaking support as with Ian Smith in Rhodesia, they represented the white middle-class & blue-collar whites. More affluent & liberal whites supported the PFP (Progressive Federal Party) of Helen Suzman that agitated for black voters. Black voters were catered for in their Cultural semi-independent lands of origin called "Homelands" which eventually failed due to rapid black urbanization on the background of the COLD WAR struggle between USSR COMMUNISM & WESTERN coalitions.
