Sometimes I feel the sensations in my stomach but they don’t register as hunger. If I’m focused on something I often put off eating.

I have issues with eating surrounding the process/ingredients. If something is missing, I can’t prepare it, & it takes me days to talk myself in to either fixing it as is, or going to the store is hard. I have to have headphones & it can’t be too busy. I walked out of the store without buying anything because I was too overwhelmed with my senses.

I know I sometimes just "forget" to eat when I am stressed. So does my husband and my children are outrageously picky eaters. There is definitely a link there between autistic traits and eating troubles.

Really glad to hear you talk about this one! I struggled with anorexia at 16 and wasn’t diagnosed with autism until I was 27, and there are days that I wish that the co-occurrence was talked about back when I was in treatment at that age.

Autism and my issues around food have so much overlap and it’s really blown my mind how much autism resources have helped me decode my strange relationship with food!

I am in recovery from an eating disorder and neurodivergent. I am being evaluated for autism. For me, part of the connection between my eating behaviors and neurodivergence is the sensory experience of eating. I have a lot of sensory issues with certain foods.

As a dad to an autistic daughter, I'm really keen to learn more about this.

I have an eating disorder caused by bullying and trauma and I also have Autism and I think I may have Alexithymia because I never really felt many emotions as a child and didn't understand other people's emotional reactions and almost didn't know I had emotions.

I'm glad I came across this cause there were things I grew out of involving food but the lack of hunger and thirst is something I've had to be very cognizant about. I've been close to dehydration because I'll have a glass of water and that's it and I've made myself so violently I'll because I forgot to eat

Thank you! 😊 I've dealt with self image issues my whole life trying to fit into a acceptable role. If I'm overstimulated or need something done and have a goal, I will focus on the responsibility and only eat after. It's always super late when i realize oh I have to eat drink potty or what have you. 😐

I must admit that I have learned to pay attention to the way that my head feels for if I need to have something to eat/drink. It gives me better cues than my stomach does for if I need to eat.

Where are the 'links underneath' in these short clips??
Thank you - so glad to hear this mentioned 🙏 And thanks for mentioning Dr Natalie Englebrecht of Embrace Autism, I found her several years ago on Quora but stopped going on there so much & forgot about Embrace Autism, excellent resource, thanks again 😀

THIS!!! I’ve had AN since age 9, and only started to suspect I was AuDHD when my daughter was diagnosed last year (it explains soooo much).
Excitedly waiting on a diagnosis for myself.

+MomontheSpectrum *Thanks for the heads up on a common co-morbidity.* My gut not sending signals unless confronted with spoiled food, I have to remind myself to eat.

As someone who is autistic with adhd and GAD I can confirm this fits me. I was diagnosed with a binge eating disorder last year and I’m happy to say I’m in recovery now thanks to receiving proper medical care from medical professionals who are compassionate and helpful rather than judgemental and harsh.
