It has taken me scores of tutorials as well as a spat with the local Canon service center to compound my confusion with the AF-ON back button!! I almost thought that my Canon 6D was defective till I saw this tutorial. For the first time, I am not only clear but overjoyed to have my shutter function separate from focussing. Now I focus with the backbutton and shoot with the shutter button offering numerous creative possibilities. Thanks, Chris.You've done Canon a great service. Bali.

thanks!  never used the AF ON feature until now. Now can I still leave the shutter button to where I can use that also, or should I deactivate the main shutter button. I kind of like having the option to lock focus or also use focus on shutter button...use both when needed?

so if you reassign the af to bbf how do you simply set the shutter button to simply take the shot ? it seems we have 3 choices here I only want the shutter button to take the shot or am I missing something ?

Thank you so much for the help. Question: I use a 7D and 5D3. When using BBF on the 7D, it seems to continue to Auto Focus as if using AI Servo mode. When using BBF on the 5D3, it only focuses once and I have to re-focus if changing subject distance. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance.

So you have to keep the AF-On button pressed to autofocus? So how could you ever lock onto a moving target (for example an animal) ?
