Prof Peprah, the director of implementation science at New York University's Global Health School of Public Health, discusses the origin of implementation research, its roots, and key concepts. He defines implementation as scientific uptake of evidence-based practices into routine practice to improve quality and effectiveness of services. He highlights the lack of uptake of clinical innovations and treatment technologies, citing scurvy as an example of a centuries-old problem that has not improved. Prof Peprah highlights the need for implementation research in the US as it takes 14% of new scientific discoveries to enter clinical practice.
