Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

Love hearing Daniel’s music playing in the background. It adds a little something. ❤️

Jess, your farm is looking gorgeous girl. Its come a long way since I tuned in last. Your creating a wonderful life for you and your family and its a joy to watch. The way you romantize about your farm and the beautiful way you tell your stories about farming is very relaxing for me. Thank you for sharing your farm life with us. I'm getting older and at 57 and I have 10 acres that I farm. Not nearly as much as you but do what I can. I Bought my mountain homestead in early 40s. Have a huge garden, couple of horses, chickens and ducks that I enjoy. At times its hard work for me at my age but its absolutely a joy.

Good morning Jess. I awoke to a video from you. My sons are coming for Sunday dinner today, and I'll be cooking for the next little while. Today I'm making stuffed acorn squash with pork from my pig from a local rancher, sage from my garden, and probably a cherry or peach cobbler. I'm also making a batch of stuffed peppers to go in the freezer for a Sunday when Mom doesn't have the energy or mental bandwidth to cook (I'm a special ed teacher, and those weekends happen more than I'd like!). I have baby bell peppers, but haven't had any other varieties grow this year. My tomatoes (which my students started from seed in April) are finally starting to flower, and I hope I have enough time for them to fruit before frost. I've been spending a lot of my weekends this month preserving food from the farmer's market, and local Amish growers. I've been grieving this week, the loss of some very important people in my life, who have left on purpose, or passed to their reward, and realizing that love never ends, but it changes to something we didn't expect. Thanks for the blessings - they are intentional and helping me to heal. Sending blessings your way today.

Plopped my phone up above the sink, tapped my Roots & Refuge feed and let er’ play while I did the dishes. This was EXACTLY the video I needed. I love a good garden tour and all the business and farm things videos as much as anyone, but THIS is what I NEEDED today. Thanks Jess.

Today is a slow and peaceful day here too, everyone in my house of 3 people are out working while I’m here watching some you tube channels and this evening. During the day I was doing a little harvesting of Yellow peppers and some Mini Bell peppers. And straightening up my little garden on my patio n out front of my apartment. It’s that kind of day. One day I will have a house with a bigger garden I dream about. That’s why I sit and watch your channel n many others. Thank you for all your encouragement you share. I can still dream at 65 and happy to be here still. Aloha from Hawai’i God Bless🌺

After this video, I went and pulled out my camera and charged the batteries. This video inspired me to capture beautiful again. Thank you! I’m in the waiting room and sometimes the beauty of the learning is forgotten. I appreciate the reminder that there is beauty in learning too. ❤

My favorite thing to do with peppers is to chop them and freeze dry to use when cooking. They rehydrate really quickly, taste so fresh, and are a real timesaver when cooking a meal. I do this with onions, garlic, celery, carrots, chard, tomatoes, and grated squash, just to name a few. Life changing!

So here I am starting this evening with a very basic Sriracha sauce, featuring Sriracha peppers, a few Super Chillis, Caribbean Red Habanero, and who could resist when passing by a plant with ripe 7 Pot Chocolate pods. Consider a bit of thyme added in. Makes a nice ferment either by jar or vac seal. Friendly reminder: Keep fingers away from face, except to lick finger tips for heat rating lol. PS: NO touching the cows after working the hot peppers!! -Bob...

I heard someone once describe the season they were in with their children as “overwhelmed by my blessings”.
I use that phrase for the late summer garden instead!

The video was so well shot! The beginning, just walking, the side view of the pepper picking and the angle when milking! It really did have the calmness you where going for! Why not try making a video just with that! A calm day for you aswell.

Thanks Jess - slow living, that's what the world needs sooo much more of. I do it and I no longer feel the need to fill a silence, a space a break in the usual.

I would dry those red peppers then process as hot pepper flakes. Put them in jars and give to everybody you know for Christmas! I did that one year and still have friends asking me when I will be doing that again. They were so hot!! So fun to have them! The other thing I've been doing with abundance of peppers is fermenting for our own hot sauce.

Your last video was quite, beautiful and peaceful, lovely ……
Every morning when I wake up, I open up my bedroom window that faces into the garden, it brings me peace and hope for another beautiful day, because of you this is happening for me, I appreciate your thoughts.

Hello Jess- I don't use a lot of spicy peppers, but my friend in the UK was from Jamaica. She made some lovely rouille type recipes that you could stir into soups and other dishes. When you talk about refuge, it brings to mind REFUGE by Dot Jackson. This novel is about a woman Mary Seneca Steele, who takes refuge in the Blue Ridge mountains of her father's family. She takes on a 1930s Appalachian lifestyle in a cabin with her two children and begins to homestead. It is about one's need to find their place in this world as she returns to her roots.

This filmography is as beautiful as the work of the Wilder Still crew. Wonderful work, Jessica, with the lighting and angles! Also, great information today!

Yes. I think we can all agree that, as a woman, you Jess are a wonderful inspiration to women of every age. You say teamwork makes the dreamwork, obviously Mia plays a huge part in all that; but so do you. I suspect I'm not the only viewer who sees that. At a time when women's roles, jobs, careers, financial victories and mental & emotional stresses are higher than they've ever been in our lifetime due to the past couple years of chaos, hidden agendas and corrupt leaders, strong wholesome female role models that other women can escape into each day, even if only for a half hour each day, is absolutely essential. There are many channels out there that covertly & overtly use fear as a tool for increasing viewership, subscribership, and money in hand, yet it seems you have not once given into that particular temptation. So I thank you for that, as it's getting more & more difficult to find valuable content that inspires and educates, or, at the very least, draws out a healthy sense of curiosity. As for this new filming style of slow-living homesteading, it's timely, on trend, and even more compatible to homesteading. Don't get me wrong, your past content creation met the educational needs of both you & your viewer but this, back to your own roots & refuge of peace & serenity and connection to the land style of vlogging is even more beautiful and you wear it so naturally. It's still homesteading, it's still inspiring, and now it's even more serene. I have watched almost all of your videos from the start yet I truly believe this style has resulted in your best video creation yet; and I wonder what else is possible. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this choice of filming for you & your farm! ❤
